The Director of General Studies in the Office of Faculty Advancement and Student Success is seeking 20-30 Teaching Associates for GEN S 100 University Seminar courses for first-year students. Most Teaching Associates will be offered three one-unit section appointments.
All new first-year students will enroll in GENS 100 or a similar course. These one-day-a-week, 50-minute sections are offered M-F from 8 AM to 4 PM. All sections will be taught in-person. Please visit the First Year Seminar (FYS) website for more information about the program.
Qualifications
GEN S 100 Teaching Associate Competencies/Dispositions
The typical FYE Teaching Associate will ideally possess the following competencies and/or dispositions:
- Understanding of the experience of the transition from high school to a large public university.
- Student Success-Centered: Committed to student success in and out of the classroom, framing the classroom as a space to raise questions, explore ideas, and to cultivate understanding and intentional practices for individual, group, and community success.
- Equity-Minded: Ability to create an inclusive space that is welcoming to the actual students in the class; students who may represent many identities, geographies, races, gender identities, LGBTQ communities, socio-economic backgrounds, religious practices, etc. and to prepare students for the experience of a vibrant and diverse learning community.
- Ability to teach a pre-designed curriculum, connect it to student experiences, and bring the content to life.
- Ability to facilitate group discussions.
- Knowledge of the Canvas Learning Management System: Class materials will be accessed via Canvas and student assignments will be submitted and graded in the Canvas LMS.
- Commitment to a timely turnaround for graded assignments and responding to student emails/messages, and administrative requests.
- Submission of final grade for each student by December 31, 2023 to the Office of the Registrar

The time base for this position (with three one-unit sections) is .20 with a salary of $3,531.60 for Range A or a salary of $4,164 for Range B. See link for - CSU Classification Standards for Teaching Associates- Ranges A & B . Salary amounts are based upon the January 2023 salary schedule. The first pay warrant will be released on October 1, 2023. Instructor training is scheduled for August 17 and August 18 from 9AM to 4 PM. Additionally, Teaching Associates are required to attend a weekly staff meeting on Mondays or Tuesdays at 12 Noon during the fall semester as part of the teaching associate appointment. Teaching associates may be eligible to receive a partial tuition waiver in accordance with university policy.

- Provide contact information for three references (At least one college/university faculty member) that can describe the candidates potential to teach or inclination to learn to teach first-year undergraduate students. Experienced Teaching Associates may replace up to two references with recent course evaluations.
- Teaching associates with appointments for Fall 2023 in home department or school need a letter of approval from home department chair or school director for the additional workload with General Studies.
- An (unofficial) transcript and verification of classified graduate standing at SDSU for Fall 2023.
- Updated Resume or CV to include personal email and phone number.
