Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities
Part-time faculty are appointed only for the current semester in which they are teaching, and no guarantees are made for continuing employment.
Due to Affordable Care Act provisions, adjunct employees may not work for or hold an adjunct assignment more than nine (9) credit hours per semester TOTAL, or 27 hours per week. The hours can be divided between Fairmont State and another WV public institution/agency, but the total credit hours must still equal nine or fewer or 27 hpw or fewer. This stipulation is due to Affordable Care Act requirements and costs for the institutions.
Minimum Expectations
• Adjunct faculty members are appointed only for the current semester in which they are teaching, and no guarantees are made for continuing employment.
• All semester appointments and compensation are contingent upon the availability of funding and sufficient class enrollment.
• Due to Affordable Care Act provisions, adjunct faculty members may not be assigned more than nine (9) credit hours per semester TOTAL, or 27 hours per week. The credit hours may be divided between Fairmont State and another WV public institution/agency, but the total credit hours must still equal nine or fewer, or 27 hours per week or fewer.
• Adjunct faculty members found to hold regular, non-exempt, overtime-eligible positions with another State higher education institution or agency will be terminated immediately from their Fairmont State adjunct assignment(s). This is due to requirements to pay overtime for secondary assignments that State non-exempt employees incur when teaching in an adjunct capacity.
• No employee is permitted to work unless and until tax and employee-onboarding information has been received and approved by the Payroll Office and the hiring manager/supervisor and employee have received an approval email to this effect from the Payroll Office.
• All of the following documentation must be on file with HR prior to employment and start of work: current resume/vita; and original transcript(s) for each institution you attended (this must be sent directly from the institution to the University); and a signed original adjunct/overload appointment.
• Hiring approval is contingent upon the results of an acceptable background check, which must be received and reviewed by HR before you may begin work.
• This appointment is considered ""at will,"" which means that it may be terminated at any time for any reason or no reason by Fairmont State University.
• Please note this appointment is subject to any institutional changes or modifications to employment.
• Adjunct faculty members are required to complete certain trainings as assigned by HR and Compliance. The trainings may be online, via WebEx or classroom trainings.
• Adjunct faculty members must abide by the provisions of the WV Ethics Act: https://ethics.wv.gov/Pages/default.aspx.
• Adjunct faculty members must adhere to all safety rules and provisions (https://www.fairmontstate.edu/adminfiscalaffairs/physical-plant/environmental-health-safety-ehs).
• Adjunct faculty members must report any personal accidents/injuries or accidents/injuries of assigned students to HR as soon as feasible after the incident (email [email protected] or call 304.367.4113).
• Adjunct faculty members must adhere to and comply with all relevant federal, state and local laws.
• Adjunct faculty members must adhere to all institutional policies and guidelines, including the provisions of the employee’s relevant Faculty Handbook.
Minimum Required Education
A master’s degree or higher in a program of study in the discipline in which they may be hired to teach is required and prior teaching experience is preferred. The degree must be from a regionally or nationally accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent. Adjunct faculty teaching in graduate programs should hold the terminal degree determined by the discipline and have a record of research, scholarship or achievement appropriate for the graduate program.
