Job Summary
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research Assistant: OSU Marine and Geology Repository Instrumentation Specialist position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.
This position facilitates the mission of the OSU Marine and Geology Repository (OSU-MGR) by managing day-to-day activities related to collecting, processing, and archiving data from geological samples in the OSU-MGR collections for scientific research. Specifically, this shore-based, scientific support position will be responsible for managing OSU-MGR’s instrumentation laboratory and related operations.

Key Responsibilities
Instrument Management and Data Collection (60%)
  • Collect and compile physical properties data, images, and geochemical profiles of core samples from repository collections.
  • Perform physical properties or other analysis/research for and with PI’s that will lead to peer reviewed publications and presentations.
  • Analyze/interpret core log data and imagery to facilitate research while serving as co-author on publications and reports.
  • Faciliate development if needed and keep standard operating procedures up-to-date for the MGR instrumentation.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instruments as required.
  • Train users of instruments (staff and visitors), including OSU-MGR protocols and OSU-required safety trainings.
  • Prepare core samples for scanning.
  • Develop, manage and prepare calibrations.

Data Management (30%)
  • Process, format, and QAQC data products for archive and use in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Archive data products collected at sea on MGR collections from similar instrumentation.
  • Manage and disseminate data and metadata which will be used in publications and presentations.

Administrative Work (10%)
  • Communicate with Geotek, Cox and/or other analytical instrumentation representatives.
  • Serve as MGR’s Radiation Safety manager with Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Manage fees and prepare invoices related to instrumentation use.
  • Prepare cost estimates for user inquiries.
  • Purchase components as needed.
  • Assist with hiring and supervision of student workers.
What You Will Need
  • Master of Science in Earth Sciences, or Bachelor of Science with two years of experience working with Earth Science instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and large volumes of data and data manipulation software (files and types).
  • Experience working with (rock/sediment) core and other geologic samples.
  • Experience with laboratory work, data analysis and data processing.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills with geological instrumentation.
  • Comfortable working with hand tools.
  • Previous experience collecting physical properties data on sediment cores or other geological materials (for example, using Geotek, Cox, AVATECH, IODP instrumentation)
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Degree in Marine Geology.
  • Demonstrated database and/or programming experience.
  • Demonstrated data analysis experience.
  • Comfortable working with electronics and circuitry.
  • Demonstrated experience repairing geological and/or other advanced instrumentation.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • In-person work daily
  • Mostly normal business hours, with occasional need to stop by after-hours
  • Works in a laboratory setting, occasional work in refrigerated space
  • The ability to push/pull/carry up to 50 pounds is required
