The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science invites applications for a part-time (.75 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.
This position will support field and laboratory work in the CEOAS, both in locations at the Corvallis campus, and in remote locations including shoreside marine-operation and measurement locations, remote ports, and aboard research vessels. Candidate will be expected to work with the PIs and other staff to assemble field-deployed equipment, including electronic assembly (soldering and splicing of subsea cables, mounting and wiring of circuit boards, data loggers and batteries) and mechanical assembly and mounting of sub-sea and buoy-mounted sensor and power-system housings. Candidate will perform routine and trace-element chemical analyses of oceanographic samples, in particular those for O2, pCO2, TCO2, Fe, Mn, and other trace elements, and macronutrients. Candidate will participate in sea-going work, including the on-deck deployment of mooring systems and towed sensor platforms, and in the set-up and operation of shipboard and lab-based analytical systems for the measurement of the above. Candidate will organize and facilitate field campaigns and logistics, including purchasing equipment and supplies, and managing shipping and travel logistics.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):

Requires Bachelor's degree in discipline appropriate to the field in which research is being conducted.

Requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or chemical oceanography, or Bachelor's degree in another scientific field and over 5 years experience in field or laboratory oceanography.
  • Minimum of 100 days prior experience on oceanographic research vessels.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform electronic assembly and repairs, including soldering and use of multimeter.
  • Mastery of basic software skills, including document editing, spreadsheet development, presentation development, e-mail, and remote conferencing applications.
  • Experience in clean laboratory operations.

Type:


Work environment will be varied from office to lab to shop to outdoor fabrication yard to waterfront staging facilities to at-sea on-board operations. Working in inclement weather may be necessary, including hot, windy, wet, and cold conditions, and work in rough seas onboard work vessels. Work will be task and deliverable-driven and is not linked to the standard work clock or calendar. Intermittent periods of longer hours may be required. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required.

Additional Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with skills, education and experience.
