General Description: An outstanding program director and academic leader is sought to further develop our newly established Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences (BSMS) degree program. The program is designed to prepare undergraduate students with an interest in the health sciences for competitive application to graduate-level health sciences degree programs (e.g., medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, biomedical sciences, and the allied health professions). An additional track is planned to prepare students for leadership and administrative positions within the health care environment. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Health Sciences, the program director will contribute to the educational, research, and service missions of the Department, School, and University. The successful candidate will facilitate intradepartmental, inter-school and external collaborations to promote continuing success of the program and its graduates through the promotion of a collegial and collaborative environment that ensures the program, and its students thrive. This position exemplifies the mission, vision, and values of the institution and acts in accordance with UT Health San Antonio’s policies and procedures.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the coordinator and primary course instructor for courses offered within the program at the discretion of the department chairperson and/or dean and based on the needs of the program.
  • Recruit and supervise full and part-time faculty engaged in the teaching and administration of the program.
  • Provide oversight and assessment to faculty within the BSMS program to include annual performance evaluations.
  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate instruction, including course goals, objectives, learning activities, and student evaluation methods (examinations, projects, assignments, etc.), and assure quality control.
  • Coordinate clinical practicum affiliations/agreements, clinical site evaluations, and assessments of students and clinical preceptors.
  • Recruit and retain students, counsel, and advise students; review student prerequisites and approve enrollment.
  • Assign relevant projects and assignments, providing timely and meaningful feedback to facilitate learning.
  • Serve on departmental, school, and university-wide committees.
  • Oversee program-related SHP publications (catalog, program handbooks, annual report; faculty management system production of scholarly agilities for dissemination).
  • Oversee development and compliance of BSMS policies in compliance with school and university policies.
  • Conduct independent research in the faculty member’s area of specialty, including publication of peer-reviewed research.
  • Seek out and pursue externally funded grant opportunities.
  • Serve as chair’s office ex-officio committee member, where appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  •  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

     Knowledge:      

    • A minimum of a master’s degree in a field directly related to the health sciences (e.g., medical physiology, biology, or biochemistry) or a specific health profession (e.g., physician assistant, respiratory care, or medical laboratory sciences).
    • A Ph.D. degree in a field appropriate to providing academic leadership in the health sciences is preferred.
    • A minimum of two years of practical experience in the field is required.
    • Interprofessional education and/or interdisciplinary clinical experience preferred.   
    • Current active membership in related professional associations.                        

    Skills:

    •  Excellent verbal skills and written communication.
    •  Excellent interpersonal skills and professional demeanor. 
    • A minimum of a master’s degree in a field directly related to the health sciences (e.g., medical physiology, biology, or biochemistry) or a specific health profession (e.g., physician assistant, respiratory care, or medical laboratory sciences). A PhD degree in a field appropriate to providing academic leadership in Health Sciences, preferred.
    • A minimum of two (2) years of practical experience in the field is required; Interprofessional education and/or interdisciplinary clinical experience, preferred. 
    • Current active membership in related professional associations. 

    Skills:     Excellent teaching and instructional skills.

                    Excellent verbal skills and written communication.

                    Excellent interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
