Faculty Professor Visiting Assistant
Social Work-Academic Programs - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (24001582)

The University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work invites applications for one tenure-stream position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, as part of a university-wide cluster hiring initiative in Race and Social Determinants in Equity and Well-being. The School of Social Work specifically seeks a colleague who brings a focus on race and health, health interventions and outcomes. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate in that broader initiative, intended to expand capacity and create a critical mass of scholars across disciplines with relevant expertise at the University of Pittsburgh. More detailed information about the Provost’s Cluster Hire Initiative can be found here: https://www.provost.pitt.edu/priorities/diversity-and-inclusion/race-and-social-determinants-equity-health-and-well-being-cluster.

Through our participation in this Cluster Hire Initiative, the School of Social Work hopes to expand our ability to conduct impactful research on health outcomes, health systems, and health disparities that contributes to our overall work around anti-racism, equity, social justice, and intersectionality. The successful candidate will bring strong interest and expertise in race, social determinants, equity, and approaches to dismantling oppression and enhancing health and/or mental health outcomes. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to these issues, an ability to be a productive colleague in teaching, research, and community engagement, and will have a clear understanding of their own positionality and the role of their substantive work in the larger efforts around anti-racism and equity in health and psychological well-being.

The School of Social Work has an established record of excellence in research and teaching; extensive interdisciplinary relationships and opportunities; a strong national presence around issues of race and racial justice, mental health, child welfare, health, and aging; and substantial and sustained community-engaged work and partnerships throughout the broader Pittsburgh community. We seek a colleague who can partner with our health collaborators across the region, can help expand our expertise and efforts in these broad areas, and who can contribute to our diverse intellectual and collaborative community.

The School of Social Work at Pitt is consistently ranked among the top schools of social work in the nation. The School is known for its strong educational programs (BASW, MSW [micro and macro], and P.h.D.); innovative, interdisciplinary, and productive programs of research; and national leadership via long-standing and emerging programs and centers (the Center on Race and Social Problems, the Child Welfare Education and Research Programs (and Child Welfare Resource Center), the Center for Research on Innovations, Services, and Equity in Mental Health (RISE-MH)). Social Work faculty and students are centrally involved in a wide range of university-level initiatives, including the University’s Community Engagement Centers, Center for Global Health, and integrated health and interprofessional education. The School of Social Work aims toward anti-racism in all our actions, as well as to be a facilitator of anti-racist research and practice in the University, the city, and the world. This combination of resources, activities, and colleagues within and beyond the School of Social Work creates an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment.

We are seeking a colleague to begin in Fall 2024. This position requires an earned doctorate in social work or a related discipline, relevant experience and credentials, a strong commitment to teaching and research, and clear evidence of potential for high-impact scholarship. An MSW and two years of practice experience are preferred but not required. Substantive area of scholarship is open but should engage topics, questions, and issues that are relevant to race, social determinants, and mental health. We seek a colleague who shares our

focus on interdisciplinary, intersectional, and community-engaged scholarship and who is conducting cutting-edge research that is advancing the field on best-practices for social work with diverse Black communities.
