Faculty Professor and Scientific and Executive Director at MWRIF

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Professor, with tenure to serve as the Scientific and Executive Director at the Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation (MWRIF). The overall function of the Scientific and Executive Director is to oversee the scientific enterprise of MWRIF. This includes all external funding associated with the continued successful operation of the organization.  

Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) is an independent research Institute and one of the largest in the nation that focuses on reproductive biology, and women's and infant's health. Since its inception in 1992, MWRI has been a leader in funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and other sources. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

·       Provide leadership and direction for the continued development and implementation of MWRIF’s research agenda, including oversight of the overall management and operations of MWRIF with a keen focus on organization-wide compliance.   

  ·       Reports to the Chair of OBGYN/WH and President of the Board of Directors of MWRIF to align MWRIF’s research agenda with the Department of OBGYN/WH and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital clinical program strategies. Supports strategic direction from the Chair of OBGYN/WH and the MWRIF CEO.                                                                            

·       Cultivate increased research funding for the Institute, including stewardship of applications for center grants, program project grants, training grants and identification of funding streams from alternative funders including Department of Defense, USAID, National Science Foundation, industry partners, and foundations.

·       Serve as a key advocate for MWRIF in all internal and external interactions by focusing on organization-wide goals and initiatives and supporting researchers and other stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

·       Foster interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians and researchers at MWRIF and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and work to facilitate further collaboration with faculty at the University of Pittsburgh.

·       Identify and build sound strategies, based on scientific knowledge, to advance MWRIF, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and Department of OBGYN/WH, including recruitment of investigators, sound financial allocation of bridge and support funding, and mentorship of junior faculty. The Director will build on existing areas of strength and excellence, as well as recognize future critical areas of opportunity for research through strategic planning.

·       Remain accountable for all fiduciary purposes, including but not limited to: Recruiting new research scientists and support staff establishing  new programs, and developing new  inventions, technologies and products; Managing the  research portfolio of MWRIF in partnership with the Chair of OB/GYN/WH; Maintaining relationships with internal and external funders including, state and federal government agencies, UPMC, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, and the MWRI Foundation; Identifying, cultivating, and developing new external funding entities; and Advocating in the best interests of the Department of OBGYN/WH Faculty, MWRIF, and the MWRI Board of Directors.

·       Implement policies and strategies which promote the representation and participation of different groups of individuals, encompassing people of different ages, races, ethnicities, abilities, disabilities, genders, religions, cultures and sexual orientations.    

Qualifications:   

  •      Advanced degree (MD and/or PhD) with deep experience in women’s health research required.
  •      At least 10 years of leadership and/or management experience.
  •      Strong track record of external funding support required. National Institute of Health funding history strongly preferred.
  •      Track record of successful multidisciplinary collaborations.
  •      Experience interacting with basic, translational, and clinical researchers of various professional academic ranks.
  •      Highly-developed administrative and interpersonal skills, in addition to broad vision and insights into women’s health.
  •      Evidence of research and scientific innovation to maintain MWRIF as a leading women’s health research institution.
  •      History of mentoring and developing faculty and junior investigators, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
