The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) invites applications for a faculty position on Structural Biology in the Department of Microbiology . Our Department has a long history of promoting scientific and teaching excellence and diversity. We seek highly qualified applicants who lead robust Structural Biology research programs with special emphasis in areas of Microbiology and Immunology. Recruited candidates will be expected to develop an independent, externally-funded research program and contribute to the educational mission of the Department. They will be appointed to an open-tenure position with competitive compensation and a startup package in accordance with the candidate’s qualifications.

We seek outstanding candidates who employ advanced structural biology techniques to investigate the molecular architecture of cellular, microbial and/or viral components, and provide critical insights into infectious diseases, host-pathogen interactions or cancer immunology. Candidates will complement and grow our existing research strengths in virology, microbiology, basic immunology, cancer immunology, and structural biology. The Department fosters a highly collaborative culture where all faculty are encouraged to work with experts in other world-class departments and participate in UAB’s many strong research centers . These include the Center for AIDS Research, the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, the Comprehensive Diabetes Center, the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Center, the UAB-HudsonAlpha Center for Genomic Medicine, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and the soon-to-be established Center for Integrative Structural Biology.

With more than 1,700 full-time faculty and almost 2,000 medical and graduate students, the HSOM ranks 21st nationally in NIH research funding and in the top 8 for all U.S. public institutions. Successful candidates must have a Ph.D., DVM and/or M.D in a relevant field and a strong track record in research productivity.
