Faculty (Open Rank), McNair Scholar, Neuroscience and Neural Engineering - Neurosurgery, McGovern Medical School

McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston , a leading academic health center, invites applications for a McNair Foundation Endowed Scholarship in Neuroscience and Neural Engineering position. This is a full-time tenure track open-rank faculty position in the Department of Neurosurgery . Through our partnership via the McNair Scholars Program, the faculty member will be funded for a total of eight years, broken down as follows: $500,000 for the first four years and $100,000 per year for the next four years. This position is designed to support a scientist or engineer with demonstrable interest in one or more of: neural recordings, decoding, brain-machine interfaces, computational neuroscience, and/or wireless system design for neural prostheses. 

The appointee could be at any academic rank and may receive additional research support based on seniority and prior accomplishments. The appointee may also be eligible for a STARs award through the University of Texas System for instrument and infrastructure support. 

 

Position Key Accountabilities:

 

The selected candidate will join a rapidly expanding team of world-class researchers focused on improving lives via innovative neuro-technologies, immersed in one of the world’s largest healthcare hubs - the Texas Medical Center. They will be a faculty member of the Texas Institute for Restorative Neurotechnologies (TIRN) , an institute devoted to the development of innovative therapies for functional neurosurgical disorders, and brain-machine interfaces. neuro-informatics, big data, and precision neurological therapies. They will also be eligible for a joint appointment at Rice University's Neuroengineering Initiative (NEI ), a rapidly growing group of world-class neural engineers, and may be engaged in training and mentoring at both UTHealth Houston and Rice University.

The successful candidate will be expected to possess world-class expertise in neuroscience and neuroengineering research, focused on the target areas as delineated above, to enable innovations in neuromodulation and/or neural prosthetics, and/or advanced diagnostics or interventions for neurological disorders. A proven track record in innovation, high-impact publications, extramural funding, and the ability to successfully collaborate will enhance candidacy.
