Associate University Librarian for Administrative Services and Organizational Development

Reporting to the Hillman University Librarian and Director, ULS, the Associate University Librarian for Administrative Services and Organizational Development provides strategic, administrative leadership in the areas of human resource management and organizational development, which includes the communication and application of related University and library policies and procedures, the evaluation and promotion processes and procedures, professional growth, staff development, succession planning, and growing the diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at the ULS .
This position provides leadership and oversight for assigned areas in the position’s portfolio, including but not limited to:

  • Planning and coordinating activities surrounding the recruitment, orientation, training and evaluation of faculty librarians, staff, and student assistants within the University Library System as well as serving as the resource person for Human Resource and Employee Relations issues
  • Planning and implementing organizational development initiatives
  • Oversight of the ULS equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives
  • Serving on the Library Management Team as well as library, university, and external groups as appropriate

The Associate University Librarian for Administrative Services and Organizational Development directly supervises 2.0 FTE staff and is responsible for a total staff of 3.0 FTE.

The Associate University Librarian for Administrative Services and Organizational Development reports to the University Librarian, and as a member of the ULS Library Management Team, ensures organizational effectiveness and efficiency, and shares in responsibilities for decision-making, resource management, and development of policies for library operations and services. While each AUL/Director position has an individual area of responsibility, all have responsibility for adopting a holistic library-wide view in terms of strategic planning, communication, and fostering an environment of innovation.  AULS and Directors are also expected to play a leadhersip role in promoting teamwork, diversity, and inclusiness within the ULS and the campus.

 

Librarians at the University of Pittsburgh are members of the faculty and are expected to demonstrate continuous professional development in addition to performing their specific responsibilities.  This expectation includes such activities as participating in and contributing to departmental, library and campus-wide committees or working groups as well as the profession at a regional, national, and/or international level, maintaining a broad awareness of current and emerging issues that affect their particular areas of expertise, participating in relevant publishing and presentation opportunities, and pursuing knowledge of professional trends and developments that can be applied to evolving research, services and collections.  Approximately 10% of the librarian’s time should be directed toward such activities and will be included as part of the annual evaluation.

Specifically, the incumbent in this position is expected to:

  • Keep abreast of and contribute as appropriate to current developments in the profession, especially as they relate to issues surrounding human resources and organizational development
  • Contribute to the profession through publications, presentations, teaching, and other professional activities
  • Seek out appropriate roles in professional associations, research and/or publication on the regional, national and international level
  • Participate actively in ULS and campus-wide working groups and committees, as appropriate.

The incumbent is also expected to contribute to the University community or the local community through service that utilizes their professional expertise.

Qualifications

Required:

  • MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent advanced degree
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, adapt to change, and initiate learning, skill development, and overall professional growth among staff and librarians
  • Demonstrated strong planning and project management skills and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and growing DEI programs and initiatives
  • Ability to identify problems, think creatively, and carry out solutions independently or as part of a group or team
  • Supervisory and management experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant increasing administrative responsibility. 
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the faculty status of librarians and their promotion and evaluation 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with central and unit policies and procedures to promote a strategic vision for a healthy, inclusive, and collaborative organization.

 

Preferred:

  • Previous HR and/or organizational development experience
