Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Office of Research, Economic Development and Engagement (REDE) is responsible for research policy and integrity, research administration, and sponsored project contract negotiations across ECU. REDE leads economic and community engagement initiatives including partnerships with public sector agencies, industry, military, and other organizations in pursuit of scholarly activities, economic development, and community engagement. REDE directs new intellectual enterprises, including technology transfer. REDE is responsible for the following units under its umbrella: Office of Research Administration, Office of Engaged Research, Office of Research Development, Office of Continuing and Professional Education, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, Office of Undergraduate Research, Office of Research and Innovation Campus Development, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Office of Human Subjects Protections, Office of Licensing and Commercialization, Office of National Security and Industry Initiatives, Office of Research Integrity and Compliance, Compliance Monitoring, and the Small Business and Technology Development Center.
ECU’s Office of Research Development provides faculty researchers with the tools and support necessary to generate competitive extramural grant proposals. The office provides a variety of support activities for faculty, including networking events, grant writing workshops, and research trainings. Additionally, the office furnishes tools to help researchers identify potential grant funding organizations.
Job Duties
INTERNAL POSTING: Open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University
Provide leadership, strategic vision, and administrative oversight for the University’s postdoctoral scholar training and support including managing the institutional Individual Development Plan (“myIDP”) program. In collaboration with partners across ECU, develop, revise, and enforce postdoctoral scholar policies including updating and maintaining a postdoctoral scholar handbook and website. Develop and coordinate regular communications on postdoctoral affairs for the campus community with the goal of raising awareness of postdoctoral scholar research as well as postdoctoral opportunities (e.g., positions on grant-funded projects, engagement with industry partners, mentoring and professional development outside the research mentor relationship). Serve as institutional contact for the National Postdoctoral Association and federal agencies supporting postdoctoral scholars (e.g., NIH, NSF, AAMC Group on Research, Education and Training), advocate for resources to support postdoctoral scholars (including representation at annual statewide meetings to establish health insurance benefits for postdoctoral scholars and dental residents). Anticipate, prepare for, and engage in national trends related to postdoctoral fellows. Strategically partner with administrators and faculty in schools, colleges, centers, and institutes at ECU, and the Office of Global Affairs (for international postdoctoral scholars) to support postdoctoral scholars in recruitment and onboarding activities. Serve as advisor to the ECU Postdoctoral Association and liaison to the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance to ensure delivery of required responsible conduct of research training for postdoctoral scholars. Collaborate with and support research development staff in planning, execution, and oversight of events, programs, and services for postdoctoral scholars. Write, submit, and manage grant proposals to support and enhance postdoctoral resources, programming, and career exploration opportunities. Work with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Development to develop and update annual reports on activities related to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.

Minimum Education/Experience
Permanent faculty position or status with East Carolina University with a terminal degree and 2 years experience in higher education.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
5 or more years of experience in a higher institution setting; evidence of working across departments/colleges on collaborative endeavors.
