Position Summary
The Faculty Assistant will supervise undergraduate students in the Organic Chemistry Laboratories, including grading, laboratory maintenance, development of experiments, and other administrative duties. The Faculty Assistant will assist the instructor of the course, in any manner requested, to facilitate the teaching and supervision of the undergraduate students enrolled in the course.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervision of Organic Chemistry Laboratory sessions (under the supervision of the instructor): answer student questions; instruct in proper laboratory technique; evaluate student progress and performance; maintain a safe laboratory environment; present pre-lab lectures and details of the experiment, etc.
  • Grading laboratory reports: Evaluate student laboratory technique, evaluate student written communication skills; check calculations; evaluate student comprehension of chemical concepts based on laboratory work and reports, etc.
  • Laboratory maintenance: Prepare equipment and chemicals for upcoming laboratory experiments; help to clean the laboratory after the students finish an experiment; cleaning/fixing/maintaining laboratory equipment; maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment, etc.
  • Development of experiments: Perform new experiments for the Laboratory Instructor to determine whether they will work well for the undergraduate students; troubleshoot equipment for new experiments; proofread written laboratory instructions for mistakes or pit-falls, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (M.S.).
  • Teaching experience.
  • Excellent laboratory skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students and give students specific feedback on how to improve laboratory skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to laboratory safety.
  • Prudent practices for handling chemicals.
  • Flexibility with work hours.
  • Willingness to accept new tasks and changing responsibilities.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Salary Range
$17.83 - $27.64 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
