Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a major research university in the University of North Carolina System with student enrollment exceeding 29,000 students. The Department of Exercise and Sport Science (exss.unc.edu) supports an undergraduate program of over 1,400 undergraduate majors with three specialization areas (Exercise and Sport Science, Fitness Professional, Sport Administration); a Master of Arts graduate program enrolling ~60 students also with three specializations (Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology, Sport Administration); and a doctoral program in Human Movement Science in partnership with the UNC-CH School of Medicine (hmsc.unc.edu). The mission of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) is to discover, create and promote knowledge of human movement to improve the quality of life of individuals and society. The mission of EXSS is further enhanced through interdisciplinary cooperation and departmental faculty securing competitive extramural funding in the form of contracts and grants. These endeavors enable the department to advance knowledge and thus serve the state and nation.
The teaching, research, and service efforts of the EXSS Department are supported by an outstanding faculty and staff, which currently includes: 33 full-time faculty, 9 part-time (fixed term) faculty, 20 joint appointment / adjunct faculty, 8 emeritus faculty, 25 full-time EXSS staff members, and 16 full-time Campus Recreation staff members.
Position Summary
This position is a member of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) Facility/Utility Crew which supports the maintenance, minor facilities and equipment repairs, grounds work, field maintenance, carpentry projects, minor renovations, and equipment set ups for Lifetime Fitness classes and departmental events. EXSS facilities are varied and complex and include Woollen Gymnasium, Fetzer Hall, the UNC Outdoor Education Center complex, Stallings-Evans Sports Medicine Center, Kessing Outdoor Pool, Bowman Gray Indoor Pool, the Rams Head Recreation Center, and the Student Recreation Center.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Performs a variety of recurring and non-recurring functions in the maintenance and repair of building facilities to include painting, small carpentry projects, minor repairs and renovations
- Maintains grounds to include mowing, weed-eating, leaf removal, pruning, small tree removal
- General maintenance of grounds equipment
- Provides special event and academic class set-ups
- Assists with office and equipment moves
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Valid NC Driver’s License, Evening work occasionally, Overtime occasionally
- Adept at the use of power tools, small hand tools, mechanical work, the use of painting materials, and the ability to assemble products as needed
- Experience in the operation of grounds equipment such as lawnmower, weed-eater, farm tractor, skidsteer.
- Ability to work as a team member
- Requires active use of flexibility, agility, and range of motion
- Ability to learn and use FUSION software for inventory controls
- Ability to complete projects with minimal supervision
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
*- Ability to work with a diverse population on a daily basis
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience in construction carpentry
Required Licenses/Certifications
Valid NC Driver’s License
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to position and move up to 50lbs
