Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

We are seeking a Facilities Mechanical Engineer who will support the Facilities Management and Engineering (FM&E) Group in the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD), Neutron Science Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

The selected candidate will directly support the operations, maintenance and construction of mechanical systems across the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Chestnut Ridge Campus facilities, and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Mechanical systems include piping, HVAC, laboratory exhaust systems, controls systems and integration, ultra-pure water systems and building cranes.

 

The FM&E group is responsible for design, construction, operations and maintenance of building and technical systems that enable the accomplishment of ORNL’s science missions.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the scientific mission of the SNS Accelerator by researching, understanding, and impacting  the overall reliability of the facilities mechanical systems and identifying opportunities for improvements in support of neutron beam production
  • Plan and schedule maintenance activities and operational outages. Lead pre-job meetings with stakeholders including craft personnel to gain commitment from all team members
  • Monitor, evaluate and suggest upgrades for building mechanical systems
  • Work with maintenance personnel, equipment owners, vendors, suppliers and building managers to conceptualize and promote resolutions to existing building issues
  • Coordinate emergency repair efforts for critical building equipment
  • Restore systems to facility for maximum availability and minimizes impact on facility users for science output
  • Identify and maintain inventories of critical spare parts for the Chestnut Ridge Campus facility infrastructure systems
  • Plan, implement and oversee building equipment and systems’ operation including de-ionized water and ultra –pure water systems, laboratory exhaust systems, building HVAC systems, heating water, process water, equipment cooling water, sensible cooling water, and vacuum systems
  • Lead skilled craft personnel in identifying, troubleshooting, and performing repairs
  • Serve as the Technical Project Officer for maintenance service vendor contracts
  • Procure, coordinate and facilitate the construction and continuous improvement of building systems and equipment
  • Plan, implement, start-up, test, and develop PM procedures and trains appropriate personnel
  • Participate as a team member in vendor selection process
  • Develops statements of work to obtain vendor services to maintain and service specialized equipment and systems
  • Generate drawing redlines to update building as-built drawings
  • Perform field verification of equipment and building systems to ensure configuration management of the Chestnut Ridge Campus Site Infrastructure
  • Work closely with engineers and scientists from non-conventional technical systems to provide outstanding facility support and modifications
  • Participate in design of systems for new facilities or replacement of aging equipment, including evaluation of equipment selections and configuration of associated components
  • Specify operation parameters, sequence of operations, selection of proper instrumentation and works with SNS Controls group to design and implement control systems solutions that improve technical system reliability and functionality for conventional facility systems
  • Participate in project reviews, including presenting to internal and external technical review committees
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance (QA) requirements for operations and subcontracted construction/installation projects
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 2 or more years of experience with mechanical systems throughout design, installation and operations. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to work in an operating facility to diagnose and trouble-shoot mechanical utility systems.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint)
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of technical concepts of mechanical drafting

 

Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • State of Tennessee Registered Professional Engineer
  • AutoCAD and Microsoft Project working knowledge
  • HVAC design, selection, review, installation, trouble shooting and start-up experience (REQUIRED, move up)
  • Ultra-pure and de-ionized water systems operation and maintenance experience
  • Wet/Dry Laboratory Mechanical Systems maintenance experience
  • Commissioning experience
  • Test and balancing experience of air and water systems
  • Experience with Clean Room operations and maintenance
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
