Position Details


General Statement
Reporting to the University Engineer, this position provides engineering support for operations and maintenance staff to keep campus mechanical, utility and control systems operating efficiently and effectively. This position also provides engineering support for campus entities to help renovate and construct facilities that meet the needs of MSU.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Systems Analysis – Analyze building mechanical utility and control systems for effectiveness, energy efficiency and maintainability.
  • Design – Specify and document mechanical, utility and control systems for buildings.
  • Cost Estimating – Estimate costs for design, construction and other items associated with the procurement of buildings.
  • Contract Management – Review and direct the work of private engineering consultants associated with renovation and construction of buildings. Coordinate work with various University entities.
  • Project Management – Manage the design, construction and administration of building projects involving engineered systems and review and direct the work of private contractors and campus construction personnel.
  • Maintenance Engineering – Provide engineering support and training for building operating and maintenance staff and campus construction inspectors.
  • Working on multiple projects at one time, while maintaining organized and accurate records of those projects.
  • Incumbent will attend and participate in required training for the use of personal protective equipment and comply with requirements for use of employer provided equipment.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Note: Two years of experience equals one year of education. Candidates who will obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering by employment start date are eligible.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and applications including thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid flow gained through professional experience or educational training of basic physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including experience with basic software programs such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or other relevant software.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Engineer-In-Training certification or Professional Engineering License.
  • Experience with design of building heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems.
  • Experience with design of building utility systems.
  • Experience with building electrical distribution and lighting systems.
  • Experience with evaluating, troubleshooting, and modification of building mechanical, utility, piping and control systems.
  • Experience using AutoCad or other drafting software.
  • Experience generating cost estimates for building mechanical systems.
  • Experience using computerized energy management/DDC control systems.
  • Experience interpreting and applying building industry codes, practices, and standards.

    Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points). Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.

    Physical Demands
    Exposure to temperature extremes, noise, vibration, heights, areas with poor access, limited space, poor or no ventilation and lighting. May work in areas containing materials such as asbestos, gaseous, liquid, and solid process/research wastes which may contain chemical, biological or radiological contaminates.
    Perform project inspections/field investigations indoors and outdoors by traversing moderate distances, ascending/descending ladders/catwalks, accessing and navigating flat or pitched rooftops.
