DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The mission of the The Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) is to lay the groundwork for the scientific foundations of the emerging discipline of data science, develop new methods and infrastructure, and train students, faculty and industry partners to use data science in ways that will allow them to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. HDSI has been established as an independent and innovative academic unit that works collaboratively with schools, divisions, departments, centers, students and faculty across multiple disciplines throughout the entire campus.

HDSI has 22.66 Faculty FTE on board, through a headcount of more than 48 faculty with split appointments in multiple departments. This highly talented data-driven ecosystem of thought leaders is only expected to grow in the coming years. HDSI is the administrative home for the undergraduate B.S. major and minor in Data Science, and three new graduate programs; Master of Data Science Online, MS in Data Science and PhD in Data Science. The undergraduate program has 1,000+ students across our major and minor programs. Our newly launched graduate programs are home to 199 MS students, 44 of which belong to our Online Master of Data Science degree, and 40 PhD students.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Facilities Director will use skills as a seasoned, experienced professional and implements and coordinates building management procedures and space planning activities. They will develop space allocation project scope, schedule and budget plans for management review, implement and make recommendations for new and revised procedures. The incumbent will also oversee various facilities-related operational activities and has general knowledge about several operational functions. They will receive little instruction on daily work, general instructions on new assignments and may function as a lead and resource or to support staff (for less than 2.0 FTE).

The Facilities Director will use advanced concepts to implement and coordinate building management procedures and space planning activities that require specialized consideration such as laboratories with special circumstances (e.g., special ventilation, or use of hazardous materials) or coordination of activities with multiple building occupants/departments. They will facilitate and collaborate with management on the design and planning for space allocation as well as assist with new building construction. They will apply extensive knowledge of organization buildings, infrastructure, policies and procedures, determine methods and procedures for new assignments, mentor and train staff and peers and provide work direction to lower-level staff.

Under the general direction of the Halicioglu Data Science Institute MSO, the incumbent is responsible for the space management and maintenance of research, research support, instructional and administrative facilities located in several existing buildings including liaison for the faculty in the newly built Franklin Antonio Hall, HDSI Building, and any future building endeavors.

Additionally, they will manage departmental space issues involving complex planning, design, and space renovation. In conjunction with the MSO and Assistant Dean, monitor the planning and design of all new builds and additional renovations to the HDSI building, providing recommendations to maximize efficient space and facilities usage. They will also develop short and long-term plans and solutions for space problems and issues.

The Facilities Director will serve as the division-wide point of contact with Facilities Design and Construction (FD&C) on all maintenance, repairs, and in conjunction with the MSO and/or Assistant Dean on capital projects impacting Divisional research and teaching space as well as the EH&S liaison for HDSI student org project spaces.

They will also serve as a member of the Division's senior management team and advisor to the Director, MSO and Assistant Dean, Program Chairs, and faculty in planning, executing, and facilitating infrastructure improvements within the full scope of space, facilities modifications and repairs.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Thorough knowledge in the areas of building space planning, codes, capacity, security, fire safety, organization and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

  • Demonstrated skills to assess processes or services to make improvements and in project management. Advanced kill to monitor production and quality of facilities work, set standards, assess progress and staff capabilities and forecast workloads.

  • Knowledge and skill regarding specialized research needs in space planning and demonstrated skill to effectively translate needs to professional architects and engineers. Demonstrated experience working with researchers designing lab space.

  • Progressive responsible experience managing construction and renovations of large, complex facilities.

  • Demonstrated skill and experience to oversee and/or perform a variety of complex construction, maintenance and administrative projects (short-term and long-term projects simultaneously) with the skill, ability and good judgment needed to meet changing and conflicting deadlines. Thorough and effective skills to multi-task and prioritize daily activities effectively.

    • Must have reliable transportation and/or a valid California driver's license.

    • Possible exposure to potentially hazardous materials, gas-fed boilers, toxic gasses, high temp steam, including biohazards and noises in laboratories, corridors and machine shops.

    • Must be able to climb a ladder up to 14 feet in height.

    • Must be willing to take all required safety training and keep all pertinent training current.Evenings and weekends may be required
