Description of Work Unit
Campus Recreation, an auxiliary unit in the Division of Student Affairs, provides wellness and healthy lifestyle oriented programs, events, and services to Colorado State University students and employees via seven programmatic areas: Student Recreation Center, Aquatics, Fitness, Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Outdoor Program, and Climbing Wall. Eight service units – Membership Services, Business Office, Information Technology, Communications/Marketing, Facility Scheduling/Event Management, Custodial Services, Equipment Management, and Maintenance – support the program functions to provide seamless customer service to CSU students, employees, and their families. Campus Recreation facilities, programs, and services promote a sense of community, support student development through leadership and employment opportunities, and encourage the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle to a diverse University population. Campus Recreation employs 34 career staff, up to 50 part-time staff, and 300+ student staff who are committed to providing a safe, welcoming space to CSU community members from all backgrounds and fitness levels. Position Summary
The Facilities Coordinator provides leadership, vision, and supervision for the daily operation and management of the Student Recreation Center, the Intramural Fields (31 acres), and two auxiliary facilities: Moby Complex and South College Field House.
The Coordinator is solely responsible for personnel management, training, and scheduling for an average of 65 student staff. This position also manages supervision for Campus Recreation Department activity classes and University-scheduled activities, classes, and events in the Student Recreation Center and auxiliary facilities. The Coordinator works collaboratively with other areas within the Department, Division of Student Affairs, and throughout the University to enhance the users’ experience in recreation facilities or while participating in Campus Recreation programs/services. The Coordinator is committed to promoting Campus Recreation values of inclusion, community, integrity, and development by creating a welcoming environment in department facilities and via programming to a diverse University community.
Some weekend hours dependent on programmatic offerings, University calendar, area requirements, or department/university events are required. This position is on-call to respond to personnel and building emergency situations.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in exercise science, physical education, kinesiology, recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, student affairs, or comparable degree, OR Bachelor’s degree with one year of full-time work experience in facilities may substitute for a Master’s degree
  • Two years of work experience in recreation center operations
  • Experience supervising, managing, and mentoring student staff
  • Experience developing and leading educational trainings
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in exercise science, physical education, kinesiology, recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, student affairs, or comparable degree
  • Two-year 20-hr/week graduate assistantship in recreation facility operations
  • Direct personnel management experience: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining
  • Budget development and budget management experience
  • Experience with facility operations in higher education
  • Experience with facility drop-in recreation programs in higher education
  • Experience with facility management software (e.g. Connect2 or comparable)
  • Experience in developing a learning outcome based assessment program for Facilities student staff
  • Fitness center personnel and facility operational management experience
  • Experience with programming or service delivery for diverse community populations
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Instructor certification

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, train, supervise, mentor, discipline, terminate, and facilitate professional development for an average of 65 recreation facility student staff who work a combined 420 hours per week 
  • Implement annual employee evaluations: conduct and review evaluations, identify patterns, determine merit, and implement changes to improve employment process and/or work productivity 
  • Conduct reviews of facility student staff and make selection for promotions 
  • Determine employee schedules, monitor schedules for accuracy and adequate facility or program supervision, adjust scheduling process based on staffing need and budget, and oversee time edit processing and bi-weekly approval 
  • Develop and lead student staff meetings and trainings 
    • Monthly Entry-level Recreation Assistant staff: 
      • Specific facility and equipment trainings for compliance with standards and industry best practices, such as safe use of equipment and cleaning chemicals, etc. 
      • Facility and equipment use policies, procedures, inclusivity, customer service, risk management, etc. 
    • Weekly Manager-level Building Manager staff: 
      • Education and training on broader department and facility operations policies, procedures, regulations, safety/risk management practices for implementation 
      • Leadership training/development topics related to supervisory components of Manager position 
  • Manage student/non-student employee safety certifications for compliance with stated requirements in each job description 
  • Perform annual review and revision of facility employee manuals 
  • Determine components and processes for student employee mentoring and recognition program(s): implement, evaluate, and make decisions on modifications to improve employee performance and retention 
  • Conduct audits to evaluate student staff job knowledge and performance during work shifts and provide feedback for performance confirmation or improvement

  • Research facility products and consult with vendors to compare quality and pricing, make selection decisions, and work with CSU Purchasing to acquire products and equipment for program operations/delivery 
  • Submit facility requests to Facility Scheduling/Event Management for delivery of drop-in program offerings within established timelines, policies, and procedures 
  • Submit marketing requests to within established timelines, policies, and procedures 
  • Contribute to annual Campus Recreation Strategic Plan review/revisions and initiatives 
  • Collaborate with Assistant Director, Facilities and Aquatics in annual review of facility policy manuals

  • Maintain current certifications in American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer, Automatic External Defibrillator, and First Aid (American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers is an approved substitute) 
  • Report drop-in recreation program participants’ violations of policies and behavioral issues and recommend resolution of participant conduct issues to Assistant Director, Facilities and Aquatics and assist with participant conduct issues for the drop-in recreation program 
  • Serve as an expert and resource for Campus Recreation’s facility management software, Connect2MyCloud, and provide trainings and develop help guides for student and professional staff 
  • Collaborate with Assistant Director, Fitness in development and implementation of cardio/weight facility training for student staff 
  • Notify the Equipment Manager of equipment maintenance/repair needs 
  • Serve as campus security authority and complete annual training 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director, Facilities and Aquatics
