Facilities Civil/Structural Engineer

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Facilities Division has an opening for a Facilities Civil/Structural Engineer to join the team.

 

As a member of the Facilities Division, Plant Engineering Department, the Structural Engineer will work on a variety of projects under the direction of the Lead Civil/Structural Engineer, to plan and conduct supervised work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of standard structural engineering, procedures and criteria. You will work on issues of diverse scope, requiring evaluation of a variety of factors, following established processes and operational policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Knowledgeable in the practice of structural engineering of new structures and modifications/alterations to existing structures, and for civil engineering of site structures and assets.
  • Perform detailed structural engineering for programmatic clients (Advanced Light Source; Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator; Materials Sciences Division and Computational Sciences) for seismic anchorage designs of non-structural components and research equipment.
  • Maintain contact with work in progress by reviewing design concepts, drawings, and specifications developed by subcontracted A&E firms.
  • Routinely reviews the status of all assigned work orders and coordinates appropriate action with the Work Planning & Control Group in a timely manner.
  • Frequently interact with a wide variety of clients and managers from other units including Planning, Project Management, Maintenance & Operations, and Research Divisions to ensure that projects are receiving adequate technical support and that the quality of work is satisfactory. Keeps abreast of technical developments.
  • Participate in operational reviews of all Construction Projects (Capital, Small and Maintenance Projects) for constructability, operability, maintainability, reliability, and life cycle cost of structural related facilities.
  • Review subcontractor's shop drawings and submittals in parallel with the A/E's review for the same subject matters.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Civil, Structural, or Architectural engineering and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or 6 years of equivalent work experience for G22.2.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Civil, Structural, or Architectural engineering and a minimum of 5 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or 9 years of equivalent work experience for G22.3.
  • An Engineer-in-Training certificate from the State of California Board of Professional Engineers, with plans to obtain a Civil Engineering License within 5 years.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and the preparation of construction drawings.
  • Knowledgeable in the practice of structural engineering of new structures and modifications/alterations to existing structures, and for civil engineering of site structures and assets.
  • Knowledge of structural design principles, calculations, applications of methods, materials and the use of computers in the structural engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to understand unusual and/or complex design problems and provide recommendations for their solution.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Mathcad and structural engineering software programs SAP2000, RISA, Enercalc, and/or RetainPro.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, while also being aligned with the internal peer group.
  • The full salary range for this position is $7,362-$12,424 per month for the job classification of G22.2.
  • The full salary range for this position is $9,185-$15,497 per month for the job classification of G22.3.
  • It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
