The Duderstadt Center, on the University of Michigan's North Campus, is a student-centric, technology rich, collaborative environment and one of the most dynamic spaces at the university. The center is open 24/7 during the academic year and is home to advanced technology labs, media studios, a gallery, the Art, Architecture and Engineering Library, Engineering IT - CAEN, the Center for Entrepreneurship, and more. With a bustling cafe, conferencing facilities, student group activities, and visits from job recruiters, there is almost always something happening in the center. The Facilities Assistant will be part of a critical team and report to the Director of Facilities.

  • Liaison with AEC and trades employees to complete projects as planned for the Duderstadt Center.  Ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Manage all facilities/building operations employees including interviewing, hiring, scheduling, and performance management (for both student temporary and full-time regular staff.
  • Lead the following operational tasks: coordination of signage, keys, and access of building stakeholders; moving coordination, including furniture and property surplus management; dock coordination including the receiving and signing for deliveries; resolution of building maintenance, and housekeeping via the central UM service providers and outside vendors, then communicating the status of those issues with building stakeholders (occupants, users, and visitors); provide event and classroom support.
  • Ensure a clean, safe, secure, and well-maintained environment conducive to those who work, study, and visit the center.
  • Arrange and/or lead safety training, emergency preparedness, coordination of emergency response teams (ERT), incident response and reporting for DC staff.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for building energy improvements, and preventive maintenance.
  • Coordinate and submit the annual space survey.
  • Engage/collaborate with other facilities-personnel across the university to improve the operation of the center.
  • Respond to building occupant needs, enforce UM standards, and steward building requirements.  
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate projects from estimate phase through completion.
  • Familiarity with large (250,000 sq ft) complex buildings and their many facility-related needs/solutions.
  • Ability to effectively problem solve and manage a variety of complex projects independently and with minimal direction or supervision.
  • Ability to foster a professional, team-oriented environment with a commitment to customer service, flexibility, and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communications skills with the ability to tailor that expertise for various types of audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail, an ability to work under pressure and to complete multiple tasks on-time.
  • Understand and value diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
  • Ability to work independently and to lead in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures, including an understanding of regulating bodies, such as the State of Michigan Bureau of Fire Safety (BFS), Americans with Disability Act (ADA), and other public facility-related rules and regulations.
