Job Description
General Description:
The Fab Lab Technician is responsible for maintaining the daily operations of a world class makerspace to enable its efficient and predictable use for all participants, staff, and visitors. This includes maintaining all machinery and equipment and tracking material and supply levels for uninterrupted use of the facilities. In addition, the Fab Lab technician will complete fabrication requests and commissions using digital and traditional fabrication skills and will be responsible for training participants and staff befitting the above areas of expertise.
Duties and Tasks

  • Maintains the Fab Lab’s preparedness for scheduled and spontaneous activities while Identifying improvements to keep the lab current and safe.
  • Performs the daily preventative maintenance schedule for all fabrication assets using our established CMMS.
  • Oversees hands-on workshops in digital and traditional fabrication, CAD, Design, machine operation, & problem solving.
  • Trains staff and volunteers in machine operation and maintenance.
  • Fabricates commissioned projects, competition entries, submitted requests, and infrastructure upgrades as needed.
  • Maintains a regular presence in the Fab Lab to help mentor students, faculty, teachers, and community members by assisting them with their projects and ideas.
  • Maintains working relationships with NOVA support departments (Facilities, IT, etc.), and outside vendors/suppliers.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

*This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the College.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

  • Ability to perform mechanical processes such as intricate repairs, assembly, fabrication, etc.

Minimum Requirements
  • Fabrication experience using processes such as 3D-printing, laser engraving, woodworking, etc.
  • Experience in a higher education setting within a makerspace/fabrication environment
  • Experience maintaining and tracking inventory, supplies, materials, and assets
  • Experience in Microsoft’s office products; Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Planner, OneDrive, etc.
Additional Considerations
Additional Considerations:
  • Classroom experience as a teacher with an ability to clearly communicate complex ideas to a wide range of students.
  • Design experience using Fusion 360, Tinkercad, and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Educational programming includes but is not limited to Design Thinking, CAD, engineering, robotics, coding/programming, and/or fabrication skills.
