The Fabrication Lab (Fab Lab) Manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the Fab Lab and the development of programs and services which meet the needs of students, faculty, fellows, staff, and the community. The Fab Lab Manager will also be accountable for providing training and support to its users, ensuring that the lab adheres to the highest safety standards, and maintaining the Fab Lab's equipment and supplies.

 

The main responsibilities include: 

  • Provide safety training and uphold high safety standards; 
  • Stay current with the most recent safety standards and regulations and put them into effect as required;
  • Collaborate with the university's public safety and facilities departments to guarantee that the Fab Lab adheres to all regulatory requirements;
  • Provide training on digital fabrication and woodshop equipment;
  • Help students with the development of their projects as they relate to digital fabrication and woodworking;
  • Provide technology support to initiatives and events as they arise;
  • Develop and offer workshops to students related to the use of digital fabrication and woodworking;
  • Develop tutorials for digital fabrication and woodshop equipment;
  • Lead internal maintenance and/or arrange for third party maintenance of equipment/facilities;
  • Make improvements to the Fab Lab facilities to enhance its operations;
  • Organize software & hardware updates as needed;
  • Manage Fab Lab equipment checkout for both faculty and student in-lab use and off-site special requests;
  • Managing inventory and material supplies;
  • Assist in the procurement of new equipment and materials;
  • Scheduling of the lab and student workers;
  • Maintaining the Fab Lab website; 
  • Perform other relevant Fab Lab support duties as directed by faculty members.


Required Education

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. Training in digital fabrication, woodworking, design, engineering, or a related field is desirable.

 

Required Experience 

  • 2+ years experience working in a Fab Lab type of environment or similar.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in both written and spoken English and Mandarin;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to work in an international and cross-cultural environment;
  • Good problem-solving skills, and good time management skills;
  • High professional integrity and honesty;
  • Well organized, diplomatic, detail and service oriented;
  • Knowledge/experience in overseeing a Fabrication Lab or similar.
