Shared Instrumentation Laboratories

at the University at Buffalo is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor of Research to serve as a

Process Engineer

. The Process Engineer will be responsible for providing technical and operational support to the to the University at Buffalo Shared Instrumentation Laboratories (

SIL

), specifically its Furnas Hall Materials Characterization Laboratory (

MCL

) and Davis Hall Cleanroom (

CRM

).

SIL

is operated by UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Candidates must be highly-organized self-starters with strict attention to detail and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, highly-flexible, customer-focused environment. Position involves execution of a large number and variety of tasks, while ensuring accuracy and high quality of resulting deliverables, and completion within a reasonable time frame. It requires sound judgement, diplomacy, interpersonal skills, and a high-level of professionalism in interactions with university, school/college and departmental leadership, faculty, staff and students, as well as external collaborators in academia, business, industry and government. Also requires strong communication (written, oral, inter-personal) and computer skills (Microsoft Office suite of products: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Outlook), and aptitude to learn new applications.

About the Furnas Hall Materials Characterization Laboratory

The

MCL

is a shared-use facility that provides resources needed to analyze liquid, powder, surface and bulk materials. It currently includes equipment for powder x-ray diffraction (

XRD

), Raman microscope, UV-

VIS

-

NIR

and Fluorescence Spectrophotometers, inductively-coupled plasma/optical emission spectroscopy (

ICP

-

OES

) for elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (

TGA

), differential scanning calorimetry (

DSC

), porosimeter for nitrogen physisorption (

BET

), atomic force microscopy (

AFM

),

AFM

-based nanoindentation tool, physical properties measurement system (

PPMS

), fume hoods and freeze dryer for sample preparation, and analytical chemistry related equipment.

About the Davis Hall Cleanroom
The Cleanroom is a shared-use facility featuring Class 1000 space, and is well-equipped for electronic device research, processing and development, materials characterization, micro- and nanofabrication and other processes. It includes more than 30 scientific tools and instruments with capabilities for deposition, e-beam and focused-ion-beam lithography, etching, metrology & microscopy, photolithography, sample preparation, thermal processing and analysis, and wafer bonding.
