The
Department of Africana and American Studies(
AAS) at University at Buffalo (UB), The State University of New York is recruiting for a tenure-track faculty colleague at the rank of
Assistant or Associate Professor.
We seek a scholar who researches and studies carceral cultures and abolition futures in a humanistic fashion. Candidates should have a focus on the cultural and social lives of black people and an understanding of how societal institutions intersect with Black life.
We seek a scholar whose research and teaching critically engage Abolition in a wide array of ways and who understand it as both theory and praxis. We understand that abolition is larger than the carceral and therefore we seek scholars who have a rich and deep understanding of the mechanisms that make abolition a philosophy of how we live together. The candidate might in interested in working with local and national communities on advocacy, activism, art, and other interventions into carceral cultures with an abolition future-oriented perspective. Feminist approaches to abolition are specifically welcomed.
Candidates should hold a PhD in Black Studies, Africana Studies or an equivalent or relevant degree in the field with a focus on Black people and Black life.
Scholars whose work focuses on the USA as well as areas of expertise across the Black world are especially encouraged to apply. We seek candidates whose work is both national and international in its focus and reach and can concentrate on the geographical areas of, for example, the Caribbean, Africa, USA, Latin and South America, Canada, Europe, or the UK.

Standard duties for academic-year (10-month) faculty members in
AASat UB, an R1 University and
AAUmember institution, include maintaining a strong research program; teaching two courses per semester, including undergraduate courses and graduate seminars; mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, including training graduate students and advising PhD dissertations; and providing service to the Department and University.
