Position Summary
Staff Nurse I is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse I functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Patient Care
  • Treats adult and pediatric patients, families, staff and students with respect and dignity.
  • Contact patient and families 24-48 hours before appointment to confirm time, location and pre-operative instructions,
  • and document in patient chart.
  • Assist anesthesiologist, anesthesiology resident or nurse anesthetist with patient GA induction whenever possible.
  • Occasionally assist with patient transport to/from PACU.
  • Verify and implement orders from anesthesiologist and dentist as prescribed by the provider(s) and documenting it
  • accurately in the patient’s electronic chart.
  • Monitor patient wellness in the PACU, following established patient safety protocols.
  • Manage patient’s acute and/or episodic minor illness or GA complications in the PACU.
  • Respond to emergency situations by evaluating patient and managing patient treatment in conjunction with
  • anesthesiology team in the GA treatment room and PACU.
  • Review home care instructions with patient and family before discharge and document it in patient chart.
  • Assess patient readiness for discharge.
  • Contact patient and family 24 - 48 hours post-operatively to review patient’s status and complications, and document it
  • in patient chart.
  • Operations
  • Work closely with Head of the Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery to align goals and strategies for patient care in
  • the PACU.
  • Evaluate best practices and evidence-based nursing to help implement strategies to improve patient care in the GA
  • treatment rooms and PACU.
  • Monitor and advocate for patient and families’ concerns in/about the surgical facility and PACU.
  • Oversee day-to-day maintenance of PACU inventory.
  • Assist with data collection regarding patient-related issues by administering a questionnaire to patients and families
  • about their experience in the facility prior to discharge.
  • Facilitate efficient patient flow in the PACU.
  • Identify specialized patient needs and informs appropriate members of the staff.
  • Attend in-service classes and other meetings as directed and as deemed necessary.
  • Assist in development, revision and implementation of protocols in the GA treatment rooms and PACU.
  • Assist with training related to specialty and education of residents, students and other allied health professionals.
  • Assist with development of educational materials for patient education related to GA and PACU.
  • Participate in patient care audits and accreditation processes.
  • Receive and provide feedback to members of the team regarding performance/practice.
  • Complete electronic learning modules and related programs by established date.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor degree in Nursing from an accredited program
    • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    • Current ACLS and PALS certification
    • Current two years of experience (within the last five years) in pediatric PACU and/or critical care unit
