Job Summary

The A+ project is seeking Extra Help Content Developers to contribute to the expansion of professional learning modules and develop high-quality professional learning. Collaborating closely with our instructional design team and under the supervision of the Project Director, the Content Developer will create engaging, relevant, and up-to-date learning modules that align with adult learning standards and best online module practices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide expert knowledge in autism spectrum disorder and related evidenced-based practices
  • Develop interactive and meaningful learning experiences, including engaging activities to be delivered online
  • Author original module content, script/narration, resources and assessments, into learning modules to be delivered online and ensuring alignment with course objectives
  • Collaborate with the instructional design team to incorporate course content into our Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Adhere to project timelines and commit to meeting all agreed-upon deadlines.
  • Participate in regular check-in meetings to refine course content and make improvements based on feedback.

The Autism Professional Learning and Universal Supports (A+) project at Illinois State University plays a vital role in addressing the significant behavior needs of children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related behavior and communication disorders, in collaboration with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). As the number of children and adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder continues to increase, so does the need for specially trained staff. To ensure their success in the educational setting, learners with ASD require specific strategies and supports. Equally important, school teams supporting these students must possess the knowledge and skills to provide effective interventions. Professional learning is an integral component of the technical assistance A+ provides to educators across Illinois.

This is a remote/online position, with regular communication and collaboration with internal teams. Illinois State University is authorized to do business within the State of Illinois. All work under this appointment is required to be performed from within the State of Illinois.

Flexibility and adaptability are key, and occasional travel to ISU may be required.


Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$50.00 - $60.00 per hour


Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in education, communication sciences disorders, psychology, or related field
  • Extensive experience of autism spectrum disorder and ASD evidenced-based practices
  • Previous experience in course development, preferably in an online higher education setting
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and deliver course content, assessments, and instructional materials
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with adherence to academic standards (APA guidelines)
  • Familiarity with online teaching platforms and a willingness to adapt to new technological approaches
  • Positive attitude, creativity, and a commitment to academic integrity and professional development

    10-15 hours per week

    Special Instructions for Applicants

    Extra Help employees may only work up to 28 hours per week for all University employment. Employees are only paid for hours worked and do not qualify for most benefits including health insurance and retirement, with Illinois State University. However, Extra Help employees are eligible to participate in the University’s supplemental retirement savings plans (403b). Applicable retirement information is provided at the time of hire. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment. In addition, extra help employees may only work up to 900 hours total during their employment.
