Position Summary:

The Horticulture Assistant will work with the AABI Educator to maintain a horticulture therapy program focused on veterans in Paw Paw Michigan. Under close supervision, the person will assist with purchasing materials and operating equipment, moving materials, accepting deliveries, light construction, garden planting and maintenance, light spraying and fertilizing, record keeping, interacting with garden visitors, guiding volunteers on specific tasks and other tasks as needed.

Position Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call.


Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest working with plants.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and follow direction.
  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
  • Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work under conditions of: bending, stooping, and working on feet for extended periods.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Transportation is the responsibility of the employee.
  • Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.).
  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
