In alignment with the mission, programs and initiatives of MSU Extension, delivers research-based information to program participants through various methods and/or provides support and coordination of MSU Extension programs.
Unit Position Summary
MSU Extension seeks candidates to join our summer day camp team. During the summer, MSU Tollgate Farm offers summer enrichment programming that includes educational horse themed day camps for young people ages 6 - 19.
As part of the educational staff, the Horse Camp Coordinator will lead three weeks of horse camp for 24 campers each week. In addition, this position will have additional 5-weeks of work at 20 hours per week to plan and prepare for the camp weeks. We are seeking a person with extensive riding instruction experience and background in one or more of the following areas: education, animal science, equine management, or agricultural science.

Duties:
- Work closely with an Oakland County 4-H Program Coordinator to plan and implement three weeks of horse day camp
- Execute safe, educational, and fun experience for campers to learn how to ride and care for horses
- Assist with camp registration and check-in processes
- Communicate with parents about camp behavior and camp schedule
- Prepare supplies and lesson plans for activities
- Support the Camp Educational Leaders and Riding Instructors with essential tasks for the execution of camp
- Assist in the overall planning of summer camp and staff training
- Be comfortable and interested working with elementary, middle, and high school aged youth (6 - 19 yrs)
- Implement experiential science curriculum and programs for students of various ages at appropriate levels using research based methods
- Observe behavior in daily camp life, respond verbally to health and safety concerns, and deal appropriately with any improper behavior
- Be responsible for the safety of campers, stewards, fellow staff, and self
- Communicate with parents, the public, and MSUE staff appropriately
- Be comfortable with and/or interested in agriculture, gardening, plant science, entomology, fisheries and wildlife, animal science
- Work in close proximity with wildlife and farm animals as part of camp
- Organize, assemble, and be responsible for equipment needed for field instruction
- Assume any task or responsibility necessary for successful camp operation as assigned by the camp director
Desired Qualifications
- Have past experience of working with children in formal or informal settings (school, nature center, summer camp, scouts, etc.)
- Experience caring for horses and teaching horseback riding
- Work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
- Demonstrate knowledge of the natural world
- Work in close proximity to wildlife and farm animals
- Work willingly in all weather (including summer heat and/or rain)
- Be physically active for an 8-hour day
- Be able to lift 50 pounds
- Demonstrate commitment, reliability, punctuality, and responsible behavior at previous jobs
- Possess current CPR/First Aid certification OR commitment to participate in a training before the first day of camp
- Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities, and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.
- Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
