Unit Position Summary

During the summer, MSU Tollgate Farm offers summer enrichment programming that includes educational 4-H day camps for young people ages 5 - 19. The summer camp programs give campers the chance to explore the food system from planting to harvesting. This position is responsible for leading daily kitchen activities. Using fresh, harvested produce, the day camp kitchen leader leads young people in preparing their own tasty and nutritious snacks. We are seeking staff with a background in one or more of the following areas: education, agricultural science, cooking fresh food, incorporating math and literature in the kitchen, cooperative games, music, nutrition, food science, and culinary arts. This is an 11-week position; paid hourly.

  • Training and program preparation will be scheduled during the two weeks leading up to camp June 13th-June 23rd. Camp closing date August 26. Camp staff must be available for these dates.
  • Mid-summer celebration and training for camp staff is July 29, 2022.
  • Part of the required staff training includes a two-day training with our teen Stewards and Stewards-in-Training on June 22nd and 23rd.
  • Work hours are Mon – Fri from 8:30 –4:30 with occasional extended day hours required.

Duties:

  • Implement experiential food science curriculum and program for students of various ages at appropriate levels using research based methods.
  • Observe behavior in daily camp life, to respond verbally to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with any improper behavior
  • Respond appropriately to hazards and any camper concerns; including food allergens
  • Be responsible for safety of campers, teen volunteers, fellow staff, and self
  • Work with camp staff to plan activities
  • Attend in-service training
  • Communicate with parents, the public, and MSUE staff appropriately
  • Organize, assemble, and be responsible for equipment needed for instruction
  • Assume any task and responsibility necessary for successful camp operation as assigned by the Director
  • Be physically active for most of an 8-hour day
  • Work in close proximity to wildlife and farm animals may be required

Desired Qualifications
  • Be comfortable and interested in working with elementary, middle, and high school aged youth (6 – 19 years)
  • Be comfortable with and/or interested in: food science, cooking, nutrition, health sciences, culinary arts
  • Have experience working with children in formal or informal settings (school, nature center, summer camp, scouts, etc.)
  • Work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the natural world
  • Demonstrate commitment, reliability, punctuality, and responsible behavior at previous jobs
  • Possess current CPR/First Aid Certification OR commitment to participate in a training before the first day of camp
  • Current ServSafe certificate is preferred
  • Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities, and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.
  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
