Ames National Laboratory is seeking candidates to fulfill the role of Export Compliance Specialist. Reporting directly to the Security and Emergency Services (SES) Director, this position plans, monitors, and directs export compliance activities as directed by U.S. Federal Regulations and U.S. DOE Orders for Ames Laboratory. This position also includes, but may not be limited to, assisting with High Risk Property (HRP) reviews, completing Export Compliance reviews on Shipping Orders and research projects, and completing Restricted Party Screenings.

The Export Compliance Specialist’s core responsibility is to protect the research, development, and technologies of Ames Laboratory employees, scientists, and engineers from transactions that would threaten U.S. National Security, Economic Security and Foreign Policy interests.

Partnering with internal department stakeholders from Cyber, Legal Counsel, Innovations Partnership Programs, Shipping and Receiving, Property Management, Procurement, SES, Foreign Travel, the research community, and effectively collaborating with external Counterintelligence Advisors will be critical to the success of this position.

This position leads the entire Export Compliance program at Ames Laboratory and is responsible for the monitoring, data management, documentation, and compliance of procedures listed in applicable DOE Orders and U.S. Federal Regulations. The Export Compliance Specialist will also support the SES Director as needed. Responsibilities include reviewing laboratory transactions and implementing procedures to avoid, mitigate, and resolve potential export compliance violations, interpreting guidance, creating new policies and procedures, monitoring activity, leading projects within program scope, and communicating to all levels of Ames Laboratory.

The successful candidate will possess excellent program management capabilities, project management skills, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse clientele in executing Export Compliance program responsibilities. A proactive approach, with the ability to analyze situations, solve problems, advise management, and develop policies and procedures within the assigned program responsibilities will be important to be successful in this position. The candidate should also have the ability to use computer software for the preparation of computer-based training, database applications, work processing, virtual meetings, PowerPoint presentations, communication, report writing and/or data analysis. This position is eligible for a hybrid remote/onsite work schedule.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
