Job Description
Established in 2020, the Notre Dame Law School Exoneration Justice Clinic provides law students with real-world lawyering experience representing clients who were wrongfully convicted. The clinic is committed to correcting the miscarriage of justice by investigating, litigating and overturning wrongful convictions.
The Clinic has been awarded a grant to administer a program for the defense of Mexican nationals in criminal matters in the United States (“PDM”). Under the supervision of the Faculty Director of the Exoneration Justice Clinic, the PDM Staff Attorney will provide case oversight, chair intake student committee meetings and assist in development of case strategy. In addition to collaborative work, the Staff Attorney is expected to work autonomously and make decisions independently for the benefit of their client.
Responsibilities of the Staff Attorney include:
- overseeing the investigation of our wrongful conviction cases
- develop case strategies for clients and reassess strategy based on new evidence
- review student drafts of witness affidavits, motions for forensic testing, petitions for post-conviction relief and other court pleadings
- participate in court proceedings and supervise students participating
- participate in Intake Committee student meetings and review written recommendations on whether to accept or reject a case.
This is a 3-yr grant funded limited-term position with a current end date of 12/13/2026.
Minimum Qualifications
J.D. required with 3-4 experience
Licensed attorney with minimum 3 years experience.
Licensed in Indiana, or willingness to become licensed in Indiana.
Excellent communicator
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer experience with working on wrongful conviction cases/innocence cases
Spanish fluency preferred
