Description of Work

Are you passionate about creating experiences that capture visitor’s imaginations, engaging them in exciting and compelling ways and send them back out into the world not only more entertained but more enlightened and educated? Think Morehead Planetarium and Science Center (MPSC). MPSC is a unit within The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). The mission of MPSC is:

To serve North Carolina and beyond by bringing together the unique resources of UNC to engage the public for an improved public understanding of science, technology and health.

Over the past ten years, MPSC leadership has paid significant attention to growing the type and quality of science education programs offered at MPSC. Improved technology in the planetarium Star Theater has increased production values, making for a more exciting and valuable theater experience. Likewise, several new programs have been developed to meet the diverse interests and needs of our visitors. Such programs include school programs, summer camps, weekend enrichment classes, lectures, adult seminars, high-definition science movie presentations, and demonstration programs. These programs extend beyond astronomy, encompassing all of the sciences that are major research emphases on the UNC campus, including physics, chemistry, environmental science, geography, genomics, and others. Links between MPSC and the UNC science departments enable the development and implementation of a growing repertoire of science topics and experiences.

MPSC serves over 160,000 on-site visitors and many more around the state each year. Visitors include schoolchildren and teachers from across North Carolina, as well as members of the general public.

Exhibits are now also playing a key role in the science center, with 5,000 square feet of exhibits space in planning for the renovation of the facility, expected to finish in early 2020. Morehead is currently working with outside designers and architects to renovate and transform the building and visitor experience. We are seeking a dynamic Exhibit Assistant see the new vision come to life. Specifically, responsibilities include:

- Work with the Exhibit Manager, Morehead staff, and outside vendors in the development of new interactive science exhibits.
- Review construction and fabrication design details, schedules, and budget information.
- Document on-site construction and exhibit installation.
- Provide technical services to maintain existing and future exhibits.
- Implement exhibit evaluation tools to ensure continued development of successful and exciting exhibit experiences.
- Catalog collection items into collections management database.

Education and Experience

The Exhibit Assistant position is a valued contributor to Morehead Planetarium & Science Center’s Exhibit Unit. This position collaborates with creative developers and UNC researchers to craft new exhibit experiences for our visitors.

Preferred Education and Experience:

- Knowledge of museum exhibits and exhibit components.
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of technical plans and models related to exhibiting, storing, and transporting specimens, artifacts, and collection items.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to present information to individuals or groups.
- Ability to work with vendors to ensure quality products are produced and are on schedule.

Prefer Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and six months of experience that demonstrates possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Minimum Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience that demonstrates possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

Exhibits development, maintenance, and upkeep requires a knowledge of safety procedures related to the use of basic shop equipment and tools. Proper adherence to safety guidelines is required. Ability to participate in activities requiring moderate physical effort also required, including repair of exhibits and maneuvering exhibit components weighing up to 40 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodations.
