Overview

The Society for Classical Studies (SCS), one of the oldest learned societies in the United States, seeks an accomplished nonprofit leader with a vision and passion for Classical Studies to serve as its next Executive Director. Originally founded in 1869 as the American Philological Association, today the Society has a $1.3M annual budget, $9M endowment, ca. 2500-3000 individual members, 3 employees, and a 19-member Board of Directors. The purpose of the Society is to advance knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the ancient Mediterranean world and to promote interest in and informed discussion of the languages, literatures, history, and material culture of the ancient Greek, Roman, and larger Mediterranean worlds. Our mission also encompasses the varied history of the reception of those elements among different communities from antiquity to the present and comparison between ancient Mediterranean and other cultures. More information about the Society is available at https://classicalstudies.org

Crucial to the Societyâ™s mission are (1) Advocacy for the field as a humanistic endeavor and for those who teach, research, and study it, formally or informally, at any level; (2) Growth in the numbers of all those who share an enthusiasm for the discipline; (3) Inclusion of different perspectives representing the many communities in North America and around the world that are now engaged with scholarly and creative reception of the ancient Mediterranean. The Executive Director will work closely with the SCS Board of Directors to pursue these priorities, both by supporting current activities and by helping to develop and implement new initiatives and diversifying the membership. Key responsibilities will include budgeting, recordkeeping, office management, grant-writing, and identifying additional avenues for impact and public engagement. We are looking for a new Executive Director to help us plan imaginatively and ambitiously for the future.
