Job Description

Academic Enterprise Enrollment (AEE) is launching a search for an Executive Director, Pat Tillman Veterans Center.

In this role, the Executive Director will lead one of the most consequential veteran centers in the nation serving one of the largest veteran student populations (over 10,000 currently enrolled veteran and military affiliated students) across all metropolitan campuses, locations throughout Arizona, and with the most significant enrollment growth coming from students entering online degree programs.

As such, the ideal candidate will need to be able to lead a multi-prong strategic plan that will advance services for all veteran and military affiliated students, while also managing current state operational needs. The Executive Director will have the presence and persona to represent ASU’s commitment to veterans and military affiliated students to external partners, media outlets, potential funders, etc. and possess the leadership qualities necessary to build trust and community with ASU veteran and military affiliated students and PTVC staff.

The Executive Director reports to the Vice President of Academic Enterprise Enrollment, serves as a member of the Vice President’s leadership team, and works collaboratively across all units within AEE. AEE is made up of seven divisions; Admission Services, Financial Aid and Scholarship Services, University Registrar Services, Pat Tillman Veterans Center, International Students and Scholars Center (ISSC), Academic Enterprise Enrollment Solutions, and Academic Enterprise Communications.

AEE sits at the heart of the New American University, a model that strives for academic excellence alongside broad access. The new Executive Director will be someone who is effective at building positive relationships across AEE units while advancing plans and initiatives that attract, retain and graduate scholar-veterans from all backgrounds.

A natural self-starter with a can-do attitude, the incumbent will possess the situational awareness necessary to work with multiple leaders and stakeholders with varying work styles and personalities.

Essential Duties

  • Supervises directly and through subordinate supervisors all unit staff.
  • Oversees and participates in the hiring, training, evaluation, discipline, and termination of unit staff.
  • Confers with university officials, outside veteran services organizations and program directors and/or staff to develop strategic planning, requests, and management analysis and accountability reports.
  • Directs measures to improve the efficiency of the unit.
  • Works collaboratively with staff in other campus offices and ASU Online to ensure problems are resolved and process changes are implemented to increase the effectiveness of the unit.
  • Plans and directs the development and evaluation of military and veterans’ programs at ASU, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures of the U.S. Department of Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense.
  • Serves as a representative of the University at state, regional and national organizations, boards, councils, and committees pertaining to Veterans Services, to include the state veteran caucus, Arizona Board of Regents and local congressional district offices.
  • Collaborates with University federal and state government relations offices in the evaluation of new, proposed or pending legislation and assists in the development of University communication with legislators.
  • Coordinates with Financial Aid and Scholarship Services on proposed or pending legislation that impacts veterans receiving federal financial aid along with GI benefits.
  • Collaborates with Admission Services for the creation, development, execution and evaluation of veteran recruitment and retention strategies with key stakeholders across ASU enterprises.
  • Guides communication and marketing initiatives managed by Academic Enterprise Communications that drive new and continuing student enrollment.
  • Collaborates with Academic Enterprise Communications and media and marketing colleagues across the university to design engagement campaigns that advance the university’s position as a leader in veteran and military supportive initiatives.
  • Monitors progress on recruitment, retention and graduation goals for military connected students.
  • Plans and oversees veteran’s events associated with influencing enrollment and service to veterans.
  • Collaborates with external constituents in identifying best methods to serve prospective student veterans and military-connected learners.
  • Serves as the strategic partner with the ASU Foundation regarding student veteran/military affiliated support and programming to advance and develop funding opportunities and sponsored/partnered initiatives.
  • Collaborates with ASU Online/Ed Plus to develop seamless services and support to military-connected students online.
  • This includes, but is not limited to assistance and training on benefits, coordination of information delivered to prospective students on benefits and use of tuition assistance and student engagement opportunities for online students residing locally.
  • Collaborates across ASU enterprises and enterprise partners to coordinate and/or facilitate support to military-connected learners.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment, and eight (8) years of related administrative experience which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with and knowledge of military service and related issues, with personal experience in military service preferred.
  • Experience promoting veteran supportive initiatives and veteran services.
  • Experience leading a unit to achieve specific outcomes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all applicable regulations, standards and requirements associated with educational benefits associated with the G.I. Bill and other related legislation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of recruitment, retention and marketing strategies for veterans and dependents.
  • Experience in program design and development. Experience in developing programs and/or services designed to facilitate the successful transition of veterans into and out of an institution of higher education.

Working Environment

ASU is a dynamic higher education working environment that operates at scale and with speed. The PTVC has a footprint on each ASU campus in order to serve students where they are, and a new “home base” office in the Tempe Sun Devil Stadium. As such, the Executive Director will be expected to operate in multiple locations and lead a distributed team.

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
