Job Description

Purpose:

The Executive Director of Finance, is responsible for providing leadership for the finance team within the assigned department to include planning, directing, and evaluation of financial operations.  This includes providing oversight of business activities strategic planning, budget administration, financial reporting and process improvement. The Executive Director will work with the departmental leadership on internal services to ensure standards of practice and department needs are being met, while collaborating with key engineering stakeholders to ensure timely, accurate and appropriate preparation and execution of actions. This individual serves as the primary to track prominent financial issues, actions and priorities The Executive Director will manage the response and planning for business needs as directed by the assigned department head in collaboration with the Texas A&M College of Engineering, Assistant Dean of Finance and Director of Engineering Business Services.

Responsibilities:

Operations and Support 60%

  • Direct the implementation of internal operations as outlined by the CFO, the Assistant Dean of Finance and the Director of Engineering Business Services while coordinating with departmental leadership to execute initiatives on behalf of the department head. 
  • Responsible for prioritization, management, compliance with applicable guidelines, tracking and providing timely responses to the department head.
  • Anticipates, identifies, and troubleshoots issues of concern or significance to ensure the successful implementation of day-to-day business services operations.
  • Monitors business performance, identifies constraints, facilitates collaboration and communication, promotes and monitors customer service, consolidating individual elements to harmonize efforts and work to create successful outcomes. 
  • Acts as the central point of coordination for the Engineering Business Services team and the departmental faculty and staff to assist in gaining timely information and responses to speed up resolution of issues.
  • Participates in regular meetings with departmental leadership and executes communication strategies to identify departmental needs, priorities, and feedback mechanisms (internal and external).

Supervision, Training, and Mentoring 20%

  • Develops standard operating procedures for staff, in collaboration with Engineering Business Services leads, to ensure best practices are followed for consistency and compliance.
  • Works to develop department Engineering Business Services team members with support for career development; succession planning for team.
  • Manages the business operations of designated department; develops goals and objectives for business staff.
  • Participates in the hiring and training of subordinate business staff.
  • Trains staff on new and existing procedures.

Collaboration and Customer Service 15%

  • Establish working relationships with key stakeholders, including department head(s), faculty and other Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station administrative offices.
  • Serves as conduit with appropriate administrative units including Human Resources & Payroll, Texas A&M University FMO & Engineering Fiscal, Sponsored Research Services, A&M Foundation, to ensure policies, procedures and practices are in place to support and enhance high-quality service and efficient business practices.
  • Promotes exceptional customer service.

Other Duties 5%

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What we need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ten years of related experience.

What is helpful:

  • Master’s Degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience in administering sponsored research contracts and grants, preferably in higher education.
  • Experience with TAMUS applications: FAMIS/Canopy Aggiebuy, Concur, Compass, MAESTRO and Workday
  • Experience in assisting faculty with sponsored research contracts and grants, preferably in higher education.
  • Supervisory/Mentoring/Training experience preferred.
  • Significant financial administration experience, preferably in higher education.
