Northern State University seeks an Executive Director for its new Student Success Center. This individual will lead data analysis and evaluation of all student success efforts on campus, with a focus on student retention, persistence, graduation, and employment. This responsibility requires close collaboration with the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, and Director of Institutional Research and Assessment. Works across boundaries within the University to promote student success through all functional areas and develops a comprehensive strategy to ensure excellence in the student experience and academic support structures across the University. As the University combines academic and student support services under one canopy, we are seeking an individual to lead and coordinate these services, creating a positive learning environment that focuses on student success. The Student Success Center will house a cross-disciplinary team of student success programs including the Tutoring Center, Career Services, Disability Services, TRIO Student Support Services and Upward Bound, American Indian Circle Program, Supplemental Instruction, Advising Center, and Testing Center.
Qualifications: Required qualifications include a master’s degree with five or more years of direct higher education experience in one or more functional areas of the Student Success Center (SSC), e.g., academic support services, career/internships services, TRIO programs, disability services, and academic advising. Demonstrated familiarity with, and commitment to, high-impact student success and retention initiatives. Must be able to lead a data-driven cross-functional student success strategy committee to analyze data and develop institution-level student success strategies. This will require coordination across Student Success Center staff, the Student Affairs and Academic Affairs units, as well as Financial Aid and Athletics. Proven ability to build collaborative relationships and promote consensus among diverse NSU staff, faculty, and students. Familiarity with academic success strategies, intrusive/developmental advising models, and career counseling techniques. Proficiency with early alert resources such as Starfish and program assessment strategies is essential. Experience working with at-risk diverse student populations (e.g., low income, first generation, limited academic preparation, students with disabilities). Experience in planning, implementing, and assessing services such as personnel and budget management, and mentoring in a university setting. Experience in grant writing is a plus. Possesses 3-5 years of experience supervising professional staff. The successful candidate will possess an energetic, approachable, innovative, boundary-spanning, student-focused mindset and demeanor.
Responsibilities: The Executive Director of Student Success (EDSS) will lead a newly-formed cross-functional student success strategy committee to analyze data and develop institution-level student success strategies, requiring coordination of Student Success Center staff, the Student Affairs and Academic Affairs units, as well as Financial Aid and Athletics. The Executive Director will meet individually with any student who inquires about transferring from NSU to keep a pulse on emerging student success challenges.
The EDSS oversees the overall implementation, vision, mission, leadership, and assessment of the newly created Student Success Center (SSC) via a dual report to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. The EDSS is NSU’s primary steward of student academic and career success as measured by enhanced retention, persistence, graduation, and employment rates. The EDSS leads continuous assessment of student success at the institutional level, utilizing institutional data and consultation with the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, and the Director of Institutional Research and Assessment. Individual leads the Student Success Center, overseeing all activities in the Center, and administering the Center and supervising all staff. The EDSS manages all personnel and fiscal affairs of the SSC, closely communicating with Deans, Department Chairs, Registrar, Financial Aid, Academic Advisors, Student Affairs, Admissions, and other faculty and staff. The EDSS ensures that learning support services, career readiness initiatives, academic advising, and resources for at-risk and first-generation students reflect and embody current innovative, high-impact practices. Working in close cooperation with SSC Directors, the EDSS is responsible for the hiring, training and professional development of all SSC staff. The EDSS is responsible for evaluation of the Directors within the SSC, and closely monitors and assesses SSC resources and services, with a mind towards efficiency and innovation. The EDSS provides financial oversight of the two TRIO federally-funded programs, Student Support Services and Upward Bound, with 10% of time allocated to supervising each program. In addition to leading the newly-formed cross-functional student success strategy committee, the EDSS serves on other committees as needed. Conducts group and individual academic and career advising meetings with prospective and current students during peak times as needed. Other duties as assigned by the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
