Job Summary

The Executive Director of the Finance and Business Office is a member of the management team, working closely with the Cancer Center Director, Associate Director for Administration, Cancer Center Leadership, School of Medicine Dean’s Office (SOM), UC Davis Health Finance, Office of Research, Sponsored Programs, Extramural Accounting, UC Davis Budget & Institutional Analysis unit, and applicable departments to manage all fiscal issues related to the UCDCCC. In addition, the Executive Director interacts with federal, state and other external funding agencies for contracts, grants, gifts and endowments.

The ED will directly oversee the administrative and operational activities of the UCDCCC’s Finance and Business Office to include strategic and tactical planning, program and relationship development, knowledge transfer, and maintenance of diverse long-term collaborations and partnerships. The ED is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing an appropriate infrastructure for the coordination of administrators, faculty, and staff in the management of large, multi-disciplinary awards, large institutional research grants, and research initiatives for collaborative, cross-disciplinary projects involving basic, translational, clinical, and population-based science, and research education and training. In addition, the ED has direct oversight and accountability for the financial management of the UCDCCC’s 300+ clinical trials and works in close collaboration with the Business Unit of the Cancer Center’s Office of Clinical Research (OCR) and other cancer-relevant departments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Demonstrated mastery of a wide array of advanced finance, accounting, and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex financial projects with multiple organizational units in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent judgment and political acumen with the ability to deal with situations that involve a high level of ambiguity that often involve diversely opinionated constituencies.
  • Demonstrated management experience and/or skills supervising, training and developing staff, serving as a mentor for professional staff and conducting reviews and performance evaluations.
  • Leadership and/or management experience including long-range planning to support program sustainability.
  • Experience working with relevant computer/software systems and applications, including MS Windows/Mac OS, MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), web browser and email applications.
  • Experience working collaboratively with other cross-functional teams and people with a wide range of educational backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced experience with sponsored research administration, clinical trials financing, asset management and purchasing in an academic medical center or cancer center.
  • Ability to identify the issues that underlie complex situations, identify interrelationships, patterns of change, and actions required for sustaining improvements when establishing financial systems.
  • Knowledgeable of University personnel and labor policies, financial systems, research process, contracts, and grants, etc.

Department Description

The Executive Director (ED) of the Finance and Business Office (FBO) works directly with the Cancer Center Director and the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to accomplish the UCDCCC’s mission and vision. The Executive Director stewards all funds under the control of the UCDCCC, overseeing the center’s administrative operating budget, recruitment and retention financial packages, programmatic commitments, and philanthropic funds. The ED oversees the annual budget process for the Center and is responsible for short- and long-term financial planning. Establishes fiscal policies and guidelines, sets budgetary targets for the Cancer Center’s eleven administrative offices, programs, research initiatives, and shared resources. Maintains advanced knowledge in processes, standards, center financial management, compliance, and grant/contractual obligations, especially for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG), NCI National Clinical Trials Network (SWOG), NCI ETCTN, and other team science awards managed by the Cancer Center (i.e., K12, UM1, UG1, U54, TRDRP, CCR, etc.).
