Position Summary

The Family Enterprise Center (FEC) at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School was founded in 2008 in partnership with the nationally recognized Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. The FEC was created to address the needs of students, alumni, and families seeking educational resources and support for their family-owned firms in a service provider-free environment.

Each year since its founding, the Center has expanded its offerings to meet increased demand. The program has grown from one course offered to undergraduates in 2006 to a thriving Center that offers coursework, leadership roundtables, club activities, mentor opportunities, alumni roundtables, a digital teaching series, and an annual conference. To date, over 900 students from around the world have participated in the Center’s coursework.

The FEC has been funded through the generosity of donors, the support of the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, and several revenue-generating programs created by the Center. In June 2019, the FEC received a major gift that will allow for sustainability and growth of programs. This gift provides an opportunity to expand the Center’s team and to create additional offerings aimed at helping family firms acquire the knowledge, skills, and connections they need to achieve business, family, and personal goals.

The Executive Director, Family Enterprise Center, will be responsible for envisioning and executing the next phase of the Center’s growth, building upon the deep trust and goodwill that exists with current students and alumni.

The Executive Director position will:
-Oversee the day to day operations of the Center
-Lead educational programming for enrolled undergraduate and graduate students, educational events for families and alumni, and on-going peer groups and roundtables.
-Lead strategic direction of the Center and design the next phase of growth.
-Build a lifelong family business learning community characterized by confidentiality and trust.
-Oversee execution of all Center activities and supervise personnel.
-Create awareness about the Center with both internal and external audiences.
-Raise national and global visibility of the Center by representing the FEC at conferences and key industry events.
-Recruit and engage family business thought leaders to deliver programs.
-Launch the Center’s inaugural Board of Advisors.

The Executive Director reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dave Hofmann, and indirectly to the Center’s Board of Advisors.

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant experience is required. Preference given to applicants with a Master’s degree and at least 3 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications and Experience

-Experience working with a family business or consulting with family businesses is ideal, but not required.
-The selected candidate must have a passion for family businesses, knowledge of the family business field, and a genuine desire to work with students, alumni, and faculty.

-Preference given to individuals who have previous experience and/or knowledge of UNC-Chapel Hill or higher education
