Position Summary

The UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs (UCLA Luskin) is seeking an Executive Director of Communications to oversee communications and marketing activities in support of a leading institution of research and education in public affairs, public policy, social welfare and urban planning. The Executive Director is responsible for the development and continuation of strategic communications efforts that enhance the visibility and reputation of UCLA Luskin and its faculty, working in cooperation with affiliated research centers. Result areas include: advance leadership initiatives and reinforce the School's identity among key internal and external constituencies, including public policymakers, civic and business leaders, and the higher education community; oversee a strong, integrated program that leverages persistent media relations, targeted marketing, internal communications, events, social media and opinion leader communications to tout accomplishments by the UCLA Luskin community and advance its research and educational efforts; build support for the School and its faculty; manage the standardization of brand identity and graphics; oversee strategic development and deployment of varied storytelling and marketing platforms, including the School's public-facing website, its magazine, recruitment documents, email marketing outreach and social media engagement efforts; collaborate closely with departmental leaders within the School regarding recruitment, events, alumni relations and fundraising; cooperate with the University's marketing, media and executive communications teams to ensure that efforts to position the School's proprietary strengths are aligned with campus wide efforts that reinforce the UC and UCLA brands and leverage support for critical systemwide priorities; maintain, develop and participate in communications efforts that advance UCLA Luskin priorities through work completed in close cooperation with a small staff of communications professionals, student workers or contract employees; support School leadership, including the writing of remarks to be delivered by the dean at UCLA Luskin-sponsored events.


Salary & Compensation
*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications
  • Experience establishing, managing, and evaluating collaborative projects and developing support among diverse constituencies. (Required)
  • 10 Years Experience in progressively responsible positions in a communications or media operation that has included text and visual communication in a deadline-oriented print or digital production environment (Required)
  • Seasoned and energetic communications and public affairs professional capable of developing, organizing, and implementing a comprehensive communications and marketing program for UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs with a high degree of professionalism, sensitivity, and integrity. (Required)
  • A minimum of ten years experience in progressively responsible positions in the communications field. (Required)
  • Demonstrated success in creating communications and public affairs efforts that are creative and results-focused. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with high-level academic and administrative leadership and senior departmental staff to identify communications needs and to conceive and execute programs and services to meet such needs.Ability to articulate goals, strategies, tactics, and benchmarks. (Required)
  • Demonstrated skills to actively and constructively participate in a complex organization recognizing the need for a high degree of collaboration. (Required)
  • Ability and disposition to stay current with activities and achievements of faculty, alumni, and other of the school's constituencies on an ongoing basis. (Required)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to instill confidence. (Required)
  • A strong working knowledge of Los Angeles civic issues, processes and players. (Required)
  • A strong strategic orientation, commitment to excellence and attention to detail. Excellent content creation, visual communication, writing and editing skills. (Required)
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse publics that may include high-profile local, national and international figures, effectively representing the Luskin School to internal and external constituents. (Required)
  • Comprehensive, current knowledge of technology with the ability to fully utilize industry-standard programs and understand the capabilities of varied communications platforms, including social media and digital marketing tools. (Required)
