Primary Purpose of Department
The Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation serves UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte region as a center of excellence for evidence-based entrepreneurship. The Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation provides training, resources, and expertise for university and community-based startups as they commercialize their innovations, scale their ventures, and contribute to the economic development of the region. The Center promotes entrepreneurial teaching and experiential learning for students and faculty and serves as an entrepreneurship program and policy resource for UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte region.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Executive Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation reports directly to the Dean of the Belk College of Business and is responsible for UNC Charlotte’s entrepreneurship and innovation programming, initiatives, and events. The Executive Director provides leadership and strategy development for the Center with a focus on promoting an entrepreneurial mindset throughout the campus community.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
  • Seek external funding and partnership opportunities to support and enhance entrepreneurship education and research commercialization.
  • Lead the center in setting and executing the strategic plan.
  • Actively engage with community to strengthen current relationships and establish new partnerships. Develop and host community engagement activities such as workshops and conferences with a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation.
  • Work with key stakeholders across campus to actively promote entrepreneurship and foster a climate of innovation, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Collaborate with the Academic Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation to advocate for cross-campus entrepreneurial teaching and learning.
  • Oversee all aspects of the the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, including budget management, strategy development, university and community relationships, and personnel.
  • Oversight of the SBTDC unit as reporting structure through this position.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelors degree required and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of personal entrepreneurial experience and a track record of success in creative and innovative ventures.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake fundraising efforts in support of the University’s entrepreneurial initiatives.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience in startup ecosystems, entrepreneurship, and the technology commercialization.
  • Experience with business model generation approach to technology commercialization.
  • Grant writing experience is desirable.
  • Evidence of successful leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support building relationships across disciplines, diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to a broad range of audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • Record of successful support and mentorship of entrepreneurs.
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
