Position Highlights

The University of Arizona Health Sciences (UArizona Health Sciences) seeks an innovator to serve as the Executive Director for the new Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies (CAMI), based at the Phoenix Bioscience Core. The successful candidate will be responsible for the oversight and operations of the Center. We seek a visionary who understands academic medicine and has the operational expertise to grow the center to one of the best in the country. They will develop and implement the center’s strategic plan, including the hiring of additional scientists and faculty, budget management, and identification and development of a substantial research portfolio for CAMI. In addition, we seek candidates with a successful track record of working collaboratively with key academic, administrative, clinical and industry leaders across an organization to grow the center. The ideal Executive Director will have the skills, experience and networks to guide basic fundamental discoveries through to the point where new biotechnology companies can be launched and novel therapies tested clinically. Substantial organizational flexibility will be granted to the Executive Director to achieve this mission.

The Executive Director will oversee the core mission of CAMI to bring new therapies to the clinic for cancer, infectious diseases and autoimmune conditions in addition to coordinating the integration of academic and research activities for a new Biomedical Engineering (BME) program.
 Core responsibilities include: 
• Establishing an organizational structure and culture to advance basic discoveries in immunology to clinical trials and commercialization;
• Recruitment of faculty and other employees to execute the broad mission of CAMI;
• Interfacing and coordinating strategies with other University of Arizona scientists, physicians and leaders;
• Financial and operational oversight of CAMI;
• Communicating strategic vision to governmental, industry and community leaders;
The ideal candidate will hold a PhD and/or MD degree and have extensive experience and success in leading complex research groups. They will have experience in developing collaborative networks and will have demonstrated the ability to guide fundamental discoveries in immunology into startup biotechnology companies and new therapies.

Duties & Responsibilities

The candidate should be prepared to provide evidence of how their experiences have prepared them to lead a unique and novel center. This is a 12-month, administrative/academic position. Academic rank and tenure are dependent upon qualifications.

  • Report to the Senior Vice President (SVP) for Health Sciences.With the UArizona Health Sciences vice presidents, college deans and other center directors; the Executive Director is a key member of the Health Sciences senior leadership team. The Executive Director serves on relevant committees, searches and participates in other initiatives relevant to the center.
  • Serve as the center's strategic, academic and operational leader to include budget and fiscal management, recruitment, appointment and retention as well as general operations and administration of the center consistent with UArizona/Arizona Board of Regents' policies and procedures.
  • Provides direction, leadership and guidance to multiple complex groups and individuals. Coaches and develops leaders. Accountable for organizational structure and all aspects of people management in accordance with policies.
  • Establishes the education and training vision of CAMI, leading and inspiring faculty, student and community engagement in classroom, laboratory, clinical and interprofessional education.
  • Develops relationships with colleagues and leaders across the colleges and UArizona Health Sciences to ensure alignment of the center with the institutional strategic plan.
  • Responsible for the development, launch and pursuit of successful research for the center and is expected to continue our strong tradition of research excellence within the center.
  • Oversees the application process for the new center pursuant to ABOR and university guidelines. The Executive Director will keep abreast of the ABOR/university guidelines and expectations, working with leaders and members to meet the standards and required elements for a new center.
  • Manages advisory bodies. These may include an external advisory board, community advisory board and internal advisory board that provide feedback and advice to the center to facilitate its advancement and foster its relationships with UArizona, philanthropic communities and the people of Arizona.
  • Responsible for fundraising, communications and use of funds in keeping with donor intent and following University of Arizona Foundation and university policies and procedures for the center.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MD, DO, MD/PhD or PhD
  • Extensive experience in immunology at an academic medical center, governmental or private research institute, and/or within pharma/biotech industry
  • Extensive experience in scientific investigation and performing fundamental research
  • A minimum of five years of full-time faculty experience and three years of full-time leadership experience in a center or unit
  • Demonstrated history of promoting collaboration and team building across multiple partners/laboratories
  • Demonstrated commitment to actively encouraging and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion throughout an organization
  • Meets the requirements for a faculty appointment as an associate or full professor in the College of Medicine - Phoenix
Preferred Qualifications • Record of excellence in teaching, scholarship and service

• Have the vision and interpersonal skills to build partnerships

• Enthusiasm for translational opportunities and a history of collaborative contributions to clinical trials

• Track record of successful mentoring and promoting younger colleagues

• Demonstrated experience locating and securing external funding for a center/unit of this nature
