The Executive Director of the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Data Analytics Center (BEDAC) is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction, developing new partnerships, and implementing a comprehensive program of research and technology services for this established service center.

Located on the Boston University Medical Campus, BEDAC provides researchers from universities, hospitals, government, and private industry with a menu of state-of-the-art data services including data management, project management, web application development, statistical and epidemiological analysis, clinical trial management, informatics, research data storage service, and other technology services crucial to conducting translational, clinical, and basic research.

The Executive Director will lead an existing talented and cohesive group of data managers, application developers, project managers, and statistical analysts. The ideal candidate will ensure that BEDAC is positioned to advance the development of data resources, enhance data management and statistical methodologies, optimize research operations, and dynamically scale capabilities to align with the needs and requirements of the research communities we support. The Executive Director will have the qualifications suitable for a faculty appointment at the Boston University School of Public Health. Broadly, they will be expected to spend approximately half of their time leading and managing BEDAC and approximately half of their time advancing their own research and scholarship as a BUSPH faculty member.

Principal duties include:

  • Build, coach and inspire a high performing team of ~40 data scientists. Manage the team’s performance and identify opportunities for ongoing growth and development.
  • Develop and execute a data and analytics strategy for advancing BUSPH and BEDAC capabilities and business impact. Oversee the development, implementation, continuous improvement, and day-to-day management of an innovative, cohesive data enterprise designed to meet the needs of researchers across the health sciences fields.
  • Collaborate with leadership and administration in crafting best business, marketing, and financial practices for BEDAC. Develop effective, strategic partnerships with business leaders to identify and prioritize analytics projects, measure performance, and incubate new opportunities.
  • Develop an ongoing strategic plan for BEDAC’s flexible growth and long-term success, including well defined goals. Shape processes and resourcing, develop a long-term roadmap, and effectively interface with key stakeholders at BUSPH, BUMC, and BU.
  • Spearhead partnerships with IT/Analytics components within BU to drive program management activities and ensure data process, platforms and priorities are aligned and accelerate analytics and insight capabilities. Form a deep understanding of the needs of researchers with regard to use of technology for enabling successful research. Understand how to best leverage technology and resources available at BEDAC to assist collaborators in achieving their research goals.
  • Implement a process to forecast research-computing demands and develop comprehensive reports/analytics on BEDAC resource usage (i.e., utilization, wait time, cost/core hours, financial projection) for use by SPH and BEDAC leadership. Act as champion for a robust data culture and digital capabilities, partnering with BU IS&T to ensure proper data security and HIPAA compliance.
  • Benchmark BEDAC service capacity vs. other research computing centers with an eye to continued development and refinement of activities.

Evaluative Criteria:

  • Graduate degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Data Science/Data Systems, Health Services, or a related field of health research required. Doctoral degree with 10+ years (or Master’s degree with 15+ years) of research experience in academia and/or the private sector.
  • Strong experience in collaborative research, problem-solving, communication, leadership, strategic and critical thinking, responsibility, and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated leadership, financial management, and marketing experience, and superb written and oral communication skills in a research-driven environment.
  • High level understanding of techniques and tools for collecting, managing, and analyzing data.
  • Experience with software such as SAS, Stata, R, ASP.NET, or SQL server.
  • In depth familiarity with research-oriented systems and services such as surveying, REDCap, and research data repositories.
  • Experience with clinical and basic science research protocols and knowledge of best practices for ensuring compliance and security.
  • Strong business acumen with exceptional numerical and analytical skills, and a demonstrated ability to develop and deliver clear executive level presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence without authority and implement change successfully in a fast paced and complex operating environment.
