Minimum Position Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten (10) years of professional experience. A valid teaching license with a leadership endorsement required.
Special Conditions
Initial screening will begin Friday, April 19, 2024 and will occur each Friday thereafter until a candidate has been identified. 
The department is especially interested in candidates with the following:
A minimum of five (5) years of experience managing a school or schools to procure, refine, adopt, and progress monitor all aspects of curriculum, instruction, and academic systems;
Experience as a teacher, teacher-coach, and principal;
Experience teaching and leading at a high performing elementary, middle or high school;
A proven track record of improving student achievement in a challenging context using data to drive student achievement results;
Proven experience coaching senior leaders and school leaders in an educational setting; 
Extensive knowledge of curriculum, instructional practices, assessments, pedagogy, program design, and leadership development.
Work Schedule
Monday – Friday
8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
May need to work/travel beyond normal work schedule.

Additional Position Information
The Executive Director, Academics will ensure all University Schools uphold the tradition of academic excellence established since our inception in 1912. Leading the academic team, student support team, and directly supporting our Executive Directors of each of our University Schools, the Executive Director, Academics will empower all academic leaders to develop systems and settings that continue to allow all University Schools students to learn, grow, and thrive. Reporting directly to the Chief Academic and Operations Officer, University Schools, the Executive Director, Academics will have a vital voice on the overall management team of University Schools.

Duties & Responsibilities
Academic Strategy
  • In collaboration with the senior leadership team, ensure the implementation of the instructional model that has full alignment and compliance with all Tennessee State Board of Education and Tennessee Department of Education requirements for instruction and assessment to achieve breakthrough student results, promote a strong culture of teaching and learning excellence, and foster educational equity for all students including direct supervision of the Sr. Director of Student Services and thought partnership and coaching of the school executive directors.
  • In collaboration with the senior leadership team, codify the organization’s vision for educational excellence across all University Schools and ensure it is reflected in curriculum, instruction, and assessment systems.
  • Analyze academic, persistence, retention, and proficiency-based data metrics in collaboration with district leaders to make appropriate decisions about resource allocation and coaching support.
Duties & Responsibilities
Academic Operations
  • Ensure all schools comply with all local, state, and federal compliance related to both inventory management related to curricular materials and appropriate tracking of all RTI2-A information alongside the Director of Student Services.
  • Oversee assessment management by serving as the testing coordinator for all schools in the compendium, train and oversee all school based testing coordinators, setting the annual assessment calendar, and ensuring all assessments meet participation and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate grade reporting alongside the Director of Instructional Technology and Student Information.

School Support
  • Work with the senior leadership team to set clear expectations for schools on academic outcomes, school culture and student experience, and related goals. Actively coach, develop, and mentor school leaders to deepen their effectiveness across all aspects of school leadership.
  • Manage the development and/or selection of high-quality curricular materials and aligned assessments across academic disciplines and grade levels that are designed to serve students at all levels and abilities, in partnership with schools and the teaching and learning team and work alongside stakeholders across the organization to lead the development and selection of high quality curricular materials and aligned assessments across academic disciplines and grade levels that support all students and have the buy-in of students, families, faculty, staff, and leaders.
  • Ensure continuous compendium-wide monitoring of student progress toward outcomes and related goals, including regular data analysis and evaluation of aligned instructional and social emotional development strategies and actively communicate academic progress against goals and outcome targets to internal and external stakeholders.

Faculty & Leader Effectiveness
  • With the senior leadership team and central staff members, ensure the development of both a faculty pipeline and a school leadership pipeline for all levels of campus leadership, in particular principals.
  • Designs and implements a Teacher Development and Effectiveness strategy and evaluation tool that is approved by the Tennessee State Board of Education.
  • Develops and leads a Faculty Residency programs and cohorts focused on high needs staffing areas for the region, including secondary STEM and Special Education.
