Executive Associate Athletics Director for Development

Stanford University is seeking candidates for the Executive Associate Athletics Director for Development. The Executive Associate Athletics Director is the chief development officer for the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER) and works closely with the Athletics Director and the Assistant Vice President for Development to plan and implement the overall fundraising strategies and goals for the department. The Executive Associate Athletics Director serves as a member of the Development Leadership Council within the Office of Development (OOD).

Position Summary:
The Executive Associate Athletics Director is responsible for managing and assessing a wide range of development programs and activities to achieve the fundraising goals of the department and university. These programs and activities include principal gifts, major gifts, annual giving, donor relations and engagement.


As a senior officer within DAPER, the Executive Associate Athletics Director works with the Athletics Director and other senior leaders within DAPER to articulate fundraising priorities and define specific gift opportunities. The Executive Associate Athletics Director and their staff work closely with the Athletics Director, DAPER coaches and administrators and senior development staff to develop marketing strategies that can be used to promote people and programs requiring gift support. In addition, the Executive Associate Athletics Director serves as the lead principal gift fundraiser for the athletics department and the main liaison to the Office of Development’s principal gifts team. When the University is in a comprehensive campaign, Executive Associate Athletics Director also serves as the liaison for Athletics on campaign committees, task forces and teams.


The ideal candidate will be a skilled collaborator and influencer with a strong professional presence, superior interpersonal skills, and the highest level of political acumen. They will have a demonstrated background of building and supporting diverse teams and striving to ensure equity and inclusion within their teams. The director oversees a staff of about 15 and interacts with DAPER staff and coaches, key volunteers, managers, Stanford Alumni Association managers, staff members in the President's Office, university officers, and trustees. General management responsibilities include developing, implementing, and assessing short and long-range plans for achieving departmental fundraising goals, setting and monitoring the general budget, and motivating, assisting, and evaluating staff.

In this role you will:

  • Provide strategy, leadership and direction for the athletics development program.
  • Plan and implement large scale, multiple fund- raising programs.
  • Collaborate with volunteers, faculty and senior leaders on innovations and goals and develop plans for implementation.
  • Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees. Promotes and supports an environment of diversity and inclusion.
  • Support diverse employees in an environment which promotes equity and inclusion.
  • Oversight for all programs related to development for Stanford Athletics.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and ten years of relevant experience and management experience, preferably in athletics fundraising for a D1 school, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Significant major gift fundraising experience, with a demonstrated record of success. Demonstrated experience cultivating, soliciting and closing seven-figure gifts from a broad range of donors.
  • Proven ability to meet fundraising goals with a strong track record in managing fundraising teams and balancing donor and internal coach/administrator relationships.
  • Ability to build and lead a diverse team with demonstrated experience in creating equitable and inclusive workplaces.
  • Excellent judgment, interpersonal and communication skills, including cross-cultural competencies.
  • Strategic skills to craft and help implement fundraising plans.
  • Ability to manage a large number of fundraising activities simultaneously.
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective management experience and excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated experience recruiting, evaluating, mentoring, and placing staff.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and motivating groups of diverse individuals, including strong volunteer management skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
  • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Requires working flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Regular travel may be required.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures . The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.

The expected pay range for this position is $150,000 to $292,000 per annum.
