Department Description | The Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) is an academic unit in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics division of the College of Arts and Sciences. The primary mission of EXSS is to discover, create and promote knowledge of human movement to improve the quality of life of individuals and society. We seek to accomplish our department’s mission through our research, teaching and service efforts. The EXSS Department offers the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and the Master of Arts (MA) degree in Exercise and Sport Science. Currently, there are approximately 1,300 undergraduate majors (4th largest major at UNC) and 60 master’s degree seeking students. In addition, the EXSS Department offers a Doctoral Program in Human Movement Science. The doctoral program, housed administratively in Allied Health Sciences, is an interdisciplinary curriculum between faculty from the Division of Physical Therapy in Allied Health Sciences, Department of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Medicine, and EXSS. Approximately 25 PhD students are housed and mentored by faculty in EXSS. Our faculty demonstrates outstanding teaching of both undergraduate and graduate students in classroom, laboratory and practical settings. We house four different undergraduate areas of study, which include Exercise and Sport Science, Sport Administration, Fitness Profession, and Athletic Training. Our master’s degree programs are focused in the areas of Exercise Physiology, Athletic Training, and Sport Administration. Additionally, Our faculty is committed to establishing and maintaining well-funded research programs that address many of the important challenges faced by society. This is evidenced by a 2.8 fold increase in external research funding since implementing our department’s strategic plan during the 2013-14 academic year. Our department’s research efforts take place in the Applied Physiology Laboratory, the Center for Research in Intercollegiate Athletics, the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes, the Exercise Oncology Laboratory, the Get Real and Heel Cancer Program, the Gfeller Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center, the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research, the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory, and the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory. The EXSS Department also administers the University’s Lifetime Fitness Program, a general education requirement for all undergraduate students; and serves the entire student body, faculty and staff through the joint administration of Campus Recreation with the Division of Student Affairs. The Campus Recreation program operates intramurals, the Outdoor Education Center, the Sport Clubs Program, the Campground Facility at Kerr Lake, the Carolina Fitness Program (Rams Head Recreation Center and Student Recreation Center), and the Aquatics Program (Kessing Outdoor Pool and Bowman Gray Indoor Pool). The teaching, research and service efforts of the EXSS Department are supported by an outstanding faculty and staff, which currently includes: 28 full-time faculty, 6 part-time (fixed-term) faculty, 12 joint appointment / adjunct faculty, 7 emeritus faculty, 15 EXSS staff members, and 16 Campus Recreation staff members |

Position Description | The primary purpose of the Executive Assistant/Grad Program Manager in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) is to assist the Director of Graduate Programs, Chair and Director of Administration and to manage the wide range of Graduate Program student-related processes, which include consultation and monitoring academic progress, implementation and documentation of program requirements, student funding, student registration, admissions, etc. In addition, this position may supervise one SHRA position (Undergraduate Student Services Manager). The position requires a person with knowledge of Graduate School policies related to any student services issues, policies and procedures. This position requires thorough knowledge of academic policies and procedures, ability to guide, counsel and supervise, should have a high level of confidentiality, interpersonal skills and the ability to recognize and respond to the needs and concerns of a diverse body of students, staff and faculty. This position is required to work independently assessing priorities and problem solving. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | High school diploma or equivalency and three years of progressively responsible administrative/office management experience; or Associate’s degree in secretarial science, business administration, or a related discipline and one year of progressively responsible administrative/office management experience ; or Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business administration or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
