THE DEPARTMENT:

The College of Engineering dean’s office is responsible for the administration of academic programs supporting seven departments, approximately one hundred tenure-line faculty, over 170 temporary faculty, and thirty-seven staff members. The mission of the College of Engineering is to prepare students for industry and advanced studies by implementing an inclusive polytechnic philosophy through collaborative teamwork, innovation, entrepreneurship, and professional integrity. The college provides practice-oriented education based on sound engineering principles and applications, while emphasizing collaboration, communication, and creative skills needed to be leaders in a global society. The College of Engineering offers educational opportunities to more than 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students in seven engineering departments, offering eleven programs leading to Bachelor of Science degrees in Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, and Mechanical Engineering, and in Construction Engineering and Management, Electromechanical Systems Engineering Technology, and Electronic Systems Engineering Technology. All undergraduate programs except the construction engineering and management program are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission or Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc. In addition, the College of Engineering offers graduate programs leading to Master of Science degrees in Aerospace Engineering, , Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Systems Engineering.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

College Events/Public Affairs

  • Provide planning oversight and coordination, scheduling, customer service, event education, risk compliance and evaluation of College of Engineering events, nonacademic programs, and activities.
  • Coordinate the college public affairs program and advise faculty and staff of the policies and procedures for college events.
  • Plan, organize, analyze, evaluate, and coordinate large and small college events including but not limited to College Boards (industry), Distinguished Speaker, Hall of Fame, Engineering Scholar’s Day, Project Symposium & Showcase, and other faculty, staff, and student events.
  • Serve as the internal liaison for college alumni and community agencies (community at-large or community stakeholders).
  • Co-coordinate, support and/or participate in university-wide events, i.e., Commencement, Open House, etc.
  • Coordinate processes and procedures for college events and respond to inquiries in a timely manner. 

 

Communications and Event Development

  • Create, write, develop, edit, and proofread communications for targeted internal and external audiences including college fact sheets, posters, invitations, and programs.
  • Create and develop electronic communication such as websites, email newsletters, social media, and video.
  • Ensure the college’s key messages are communicated effectively and that materials meet the college and university’s vision, branding, and editorial standards.
  • Provide reports on communication effectiveness and recommendations for improving communication, marketing, and collaboration related to college events.

 

Marketing and Media Relations

  • Help develop strategies to promote the image of the college and the college programs through data analysis and translate the results into strategic communication efforts.
  • Cultivate corporate sponsorships, as related to college events
  • Manage and coordinate electronic and print media to market college events.
  • Collaborate with Strategic Communications to identify and promote potentially newsworthy topics to the media.
  • Cultivate relationships with Strategic Communications to enhance media relations.

 

Student/Event Staff

  • Recommend and recruit student staff.
  • Train, provide leadership, and direction to student and event support staff.
  • Assess and monitor work assignments before and during the event.
  • Provide input on event work performance. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public relations, journalism, marketing or a related field with demonstrated experience in storytelling, editing especially on digital platforms. 
  • Up to two (2) years of related professional or technical experience. 
  • Comprehensive, in-depth knowledge of communications, strategic communications, media, and/or marketing theories and concepts to develop and execute communications strategies and plans to promote and position the university.
  • Expert knowledge of university communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaigns.
  • Ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective.
  • Ability to effectively manage media relations and apply effective media strategies and techniques

 

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing, design, layout, editing, printing, production, and distribution of promotional materials, both printed and web based.
  • Previous experience in a higher educational environment.
  • Previous experience using website content manager system.
  • Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media.
  • Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles, and formats.
  • Ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening, and interpretive skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the college and increase positive media coverage
