Event Technician

We are seeking an Event Technician  who will serve as one of the primary technicians to execute all technical aspects of all events in Shriver Hall Auditorium. Assists with executing events around campus in non-classroom spaces. Works with the Multimedia Services Manager in planning all events in Shriver and around campus, oversees all changeovers, load-ins and loadouts for events. May act as day-of supervisor for events and oversees any staff, student employees and independent contractors who work during those events as stage managers or technical assistants. Executes maintenance of the audio-visual equipment in Shriver Auditorium and event spaces. Note: This position requires 100% on campus work. Although the standard schedule will be 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, those days and hours will be highly flexible and subject to change based on weekly event schedules.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

35% - Multimedia Event Support – Shriver Hall

  • Provide all stage, production, sound, lighting, video and technical needs for all events/performances in Shriver Auditorium.

35% -- Multimedia Event Support – Campus Wide

  • Provide all stage, production, sound, lighting, video and technical needs for all events/performances in non-classroom spaces on Homewood Campus.

20% -- Installing, Updating, and Maintaining Technology

  • Primary person responsible for executing all technical elements in Shriver. Installing, updating and maintaining the technology in that building. Work with the Multimedia Services Manager to develop and keep updated a technical package for Shriver Auditorium.

10% -- Relationship Management

  • Provide day-of supervision and act as a liaison between multiple departments for certain shows.
  • Interact with a wide variety of representatives from departments around campus and beyond.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Mastery of technical aspects for sound reinforcement, audio mixing, lighting, film and video.
  • Position has a strong focus on lighting programming and execution.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to communicate professionally and collaboratively with staff and colleagues from a broad spectrum of the university’s offices and departments, as well as guest artists, guest speakers and contacts at local arts organizations.
  • Ability to remain comfortable in high-pressure situations
  • Must be an adaptable, solutions-oriented problem solver.
  • Ability to work long hours and nontraditional shifts, evenings and weekends due to performance schedule.
  • Ability to do long-range planning.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with multimedia distribution systems, preferably Crestron.
  • Current knowledge of all fire and safety codes and procedures.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical area of the performing arts, event management or a similar field.
  • Experience working with a wide range of users, including university students, faculty and staff and guest lecturers and performing artists.
  • Experience with ETC Lighting Console, Allen & Heath Audio Console and Blackmagic Design Video Switchers.
  • Crestron Digital Media Certification (DMC-E-4K) and/or AVIXA CTS is a plus.
