Job Description Summary:
Since 1997, Read Out and Read Kansas City (ROR-KC) has been providing critical early literacy services to at risk children, ages birth to five, at partnering healthcare clinics throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. ROR-KC, the only medically-based early literacy program in Kansas City, makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric care so children grow up with access to books, engaged parents, and enter school ready to learn. Our offices are located on the KU Medical Center campus in the support services building with a small team and regular volunteers.
The Event and Communications Coordinator will support Reach Out and Read Kansas City’s fundraising event planning efforts, communication and marketing efforts and lead the volunteer program (recruiting, onboarding, placing and recognizing volunteers), all of which are critical to our ability to positively impact the community. This will include the planning of two signature events, a few related smaller events and being the liaison for event sponsors. The Events and Communication Coordinator will be responsible for creating content and managing our social media accounts, e-newsletters, monitoring and updating the website and main email account and working with the Executive Director for email dissemination of appeal letters. This employee will report to the Executive Director.

Job Description:
Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and relevant work experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Work Experience:

  • One year of professional experience in event planning, social media management, public relations, marketing or a writing field.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn.


Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Two years professional experience in special event planning, social media management, public relations, marketing, fundraising, or a writing field.

  • One year of experience with websites and social media posting, designing, blogging, writing and editing.

  • Background in Journalism

  • Experience with Canva, Donor Perfect, and/or One Cause

  • Experience with Graphic Design

  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including various organizational and educational levels.

Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Strong organizational skills, willing to take initiative and use independent judgement.

  • Demonstrate attention to detail and work well in a team.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external constituents.


Job Duties Outlined

Event Planning and Fundraising (45%)

  • Responsible for coordinating, fundraising and growing signature events annually

  • Coordinating smaller fundraising campaigns and events, i.e., Giving Tuesday, One Day, One KU, restaurant percentage nights.

  • Serve as a communication liaison between ROR-KC and media outlets.

  • Recruit and coordinate event committee members/volunteers to assist in planning and executing events. * Committee meetings will take place when it is most convenient for most of the volunteers.

  • Connect with event sponsors. Maintain and grow positive relationships with event sponsors.

Manage Marketing and Communications (40%)

  • Become familiar with ROR-KC’s style guide to ensure branding, voice, and the mission are present and consistent across all materials.

  • Create content for social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, as well as maintain the ROR-KC blog and website (blogs, posts, videos, create events, etc.)

  • Maintain Communications Plan, including;

  • Creating content for social media accounts (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn)

  • Maintaining/updating the ROR-KC website regularly (posts, videos, event pages).

  • Content and design of e-newsletter

  • Assisting the board marketing committee with marketing efforts

  • Schedule meetings and/or interviews with participating families, medical professionals, or volunteers as necessary to develop content.

  • Plan and execute the annual parent survey from dissemination to evaluation

Volunteer Coordination (15%)

  • Welcome volunteers by email in a timely manner once an inquiry is made to ROR-KC.

  • Schedule, train, and place new volunteers.

  • Coordinate a volunteer appreciation event annually, in April.

  • Communicate volunteer interest and needs with ROR-KC staff to find appropriate volunteer opportunities.

  • Enter and maintain volunteer information in database.

  • Track and report volunteer information for program-related and grant purposes.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
