Job Summary

UCSF's mission of Advancing Health Worldwide. You will have the opportunity to work with ergonomics as it applies in office, laboratory, research, manual materials handling, clinical, and other work environments at various UCSF locations.

Under the direction of the Program Manager/Principal Ergonomist, the Ergonomics Specialist performs ergonomics services of varying scope, complexity, and priority for the UCSF Ergonomics & Human Factors Program. Work duties include performing ergonomics evaluations and trainings at onsite locations, in Ergonomics equipment fitting rooms, and virtually; as well as implementing a variety of independent and collaborative duties and projects related to ergonomics.

The Ergonomics Specialist applies professional knowledge or expertise in one or more specialty areas within Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and serves as lead person on one or more program(s) within a single discipline. Work is reviewed upon completion to ensure predetermined objectives are adequately met and that application of professional / technical judgment is sound. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice. Decision-making is based on established procedures; relevant laws; regulations and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology; impact on other EH&S programs, and senior management approvals as required. Decisions may impact individual work, other EH&S programs, other departments and / or segments of the organization.

The Specialist is comfortable with a day-to-day schedule that varies according to business needs. This may include, but not be limited to, assisting customers; partnering with stakeholders; working on projects and initiatives of varying complexity; assisting other team members; documentation and reporting; creating resource and training material; outreach and communication; and interacting and collaborating with the University of California Ergonomics Workgroup.

The Specialist works closely with stakeholders to ensure compliance with ergonomics regulations and procedures. They use ergonomics principles; standards, guidelines, and best practices; tools; and methodologies to implement the UCSF Ergonomics & Human Factors Program to a variety of organizational infrastructures and departments.

The Specialist interacts with a wide range of audiences, making excellent customer-service and verbal, written, and presentation communication skills essential. They have effective emotional intelligence skills and political acumen to solve problems and are able to handle a variety of situations with professionalism, tact, and empathy. They are eager to work easily and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and with people who may be in pain, discomfort, or have disabilities.
Successful candidates are well-organized and detailed and can analyze and prioritize issues independently and within a team. Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The UCSF Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) provides safety and compliance guidance to all UCSF operations and facilities, including activities across both the Campus and the Health System. Under formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with both the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), EH&S Fire Prevention staff perform plan review, construction inspections, existing building inspections and other work on behalf of OSFM and OSHPD, providing reviews and code enforcement on behalf of the agencies. Other EH&S staff provide expert consultation and other services related to biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety, workplace safety and ergonomics, industrial hygiene, environmental protection and spill response. The EH&S Office reports ultimately to the Chancellor, through the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Infrastructure and Operations, the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area (e.g. ergonomics, human factors, exercise science, physical/occupational therapy, kinesiology, psychology, engineering) or related fields with a strong emphasis in physical ergonomics/occupational biomechanics or equivalent experience/training
  • Three (3) or more years of related work experience
  • Thorough knowledge of the Ergonomics field, including related laws and regulations; and general understanding of all EH&S fields
  • Thorough knowledge and skill in interpreting and applying applicable local, state, and federal ergonomics and safety regulations and related standards and guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use ergonomics methodologies and tools to analyze risk, identify counter-measures, and provide recommendations
  • Record of experience performing complex office/computer ergonomics evaluations and analyses and completing timely and professional ergonomics reports for office/computer environments
  • Record of strong analytical, detail-oriented, and organizational skills to organize, prioritize, and manage the successful completion of work and projects within time and budget constraints
  • Demonstrated ability to use discretion, and to exercise good judgment and resourcefulness
  • Demonstrated ability to perform consistently, make decisions independently, and complete duties accurately with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish daily and project-related tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to use excellent oral and written communication skills with a high level of professionalism, sensitivity, tact, and efficiency with diverse stakeholders
  • Solid, demonstrated grasp of English business, technical, and report writing - including formatting, grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and software applications for word processing, spreadsheets, database management, communications, and web browsing
  • Demonstrated ability to create and deliver effective and engaging presentations and training/instructional materials
  • Effective emotional intelligence skills. Record of ability to communicate with, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with, a variety of internal and external stakeholders with different situations, limitations, abilities, and disabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and conduct meetings and handle sensitive communications
  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related area (e.g. ergonomics, human factors, exercise science, physical/occupational therapy, kinesiology, public health, psychology, engineering) or related fields with a strong emphasis in physical ergonomics/occupational biomechanics or equivalent experience/training
  • Three (3) or more years of experience performing ergonomics evaluations and trainings related to individuals, groups, and equipment
  • Professional certification in ergonomics
  • Experience performing ergonomics evaluations for laboratory, research, clinical, manual material handling, and other environments
  • Experience performing virtual ergonomics evaluations
  • Experience with engineering-, biomechanics-, and systems-approaches to ergonomics
  • Experience taking active roles in ergonomics projects, with supervision
  • Experience developing and/or implementing ergonomics train-the-trainer programs
  • Knowledge about human factors, usability, and accessibility principles
  • Proficiency with technical software related to ergonomics and communications
  • Ability and passion to work with ergonomics in a diverse research, clinical, and educational environment
