The UVA School of Education and Human development’s Dept of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education wishes to hire a part time wage Research Specialist – Intermediate. This position is for a key member of the team for two National Science Foundation (NSF) funded research projects - the Honoring Equity and Access Rubrics for Mathematics Instruction (HEAR-MI) in Coaching project and the Validation of Equity and Access Rubrics for Mathematics Instruction (VEARMI) project. The research specialist will become part of a vibrant team of faculty, students, and staff conducting research and will manage and support the daily operations for the two projects. The HEAR-MI project specifically focuses on supporting mathematics teachers to develop more equitable instructional practices through mathematics-focused, video-based coaching that centers culturally responsive and identity-oriented instructional practices. The VEAR-MI project specifically focuses on validating classroom observational rubrics that are intended to measure instructional practices that support marginalized students’ participation, access, and achievement, particularly in the context of high-quality mathematics.

This is a restricted position. Continuation past the initial 12-month appointment is dependent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding. This position is available immediately. In person and remote candidates will be considered.

Project coordination

  • Tracking and facilitating project work
  • Organizing project meetings and events
  • Drafting project protocols, agendas, and schedules
  • Preparing and planning for various trainings
  • Keeping research records organized and confidential
  • Engaging in procurement for projects
  • Assisting in overseeing data collection
  • Reviewing budgets, estimating costs, projecting expenses
  • Organizing trainee interviews
  • Managing project personnel and overseeing the on-boarding of new project team members

Communications

  • Generating reports for schools and other outside partner audiences
  • Coordinating partnership work
  • Interfacing with the members of the project team
  • Interfacing with faculty mentors and graduate student workers
  • Gathering materials and preparing annual and final reports to the funder, including budget justifications
  • Advertising for candidates for research assistantships

The position will remain open until filled and will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: Three years of relevant experience.  Master's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Licensure: None.

Preferred Skills

Significant preference will be given to those candidates who meet some or all preferred qualifications. Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a cover letter detailing how their experience and qualifications align with the following:

  • Master’s degree in mathematics education, elementary education, and/or related fields; or other equivalent relevant experience.
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interpret and answer a variety of questions with diplomacy and accuracy
  • Excellent technological skills with the ability to troubleshoot technology issues independently
  • Detailed-oriented person with strong organizational, management and planning skills and the ability to multitask
  • Meticulous, self-directed, conscientious, good listener, and quick learner
  • Ability to work under pressure in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining professionalism
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and lead and facilitate cross-functional groups
  • Ability to interact collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders and the research team
  • Familiarity with Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes
  • Mastery in Outlook, Zoom, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), G Suite (Google Calendar, Sheets, Docs, Forms, etc.) and web applications is essential.
  • Experience with Box, Qualtrics, Canva, and project management applications.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
