Epic Principal Trainer Specialist II for Ambulatory Surgery Center - OpTime, Lumens, and Anesthesia

UTHealth Houston is looking for a Principal Trainer who is certified for training in either OpTIme. Lumens, or the Anesthesia modules of the EHR software. You will work with a new surgery center that will be launching the use of these Epic tools. You must have at least four years of experience in a clinical environment and at least a full year supporting one of three areas with training and teaching classes on how to use the software. It will help if you have heavy build experience as well because this will be a new training curriculum and environment for UTHealth Houston and our clinical users. 

This role will work a hybrid schedule ideally. You may need to teach classes on-site at the surgery center at times, so we need someone with the ability to work both remotely and in the office. This role will qualify for all benefits from UTHealth Houston.

Position Summary:

The Principal Trainer II is responsible for the ongoing design, development, testing, implementation, and support of training programs associated with, but not limited to, any and all assigned modules across the health care system. In this case, they will focus on OpTime, Lumens, and Anesthesia. Creates and maintains course curriculum and supporting training collateral, including classroom and web-based content, build training data within the training environments, and executes the train-the-trainer program for credentialed trainers.

Position Key Accountabilities:


  • Obtains and maintains expertise in the support and optimization of assigned Epic module(s).
  • Assesses educational needs of the individual, enterprise, and community as evidenced by:
  • Identifying and improving training for both Go-Live and new-hire curriculum.
  • Determining specific training needs and priorities.
  • Prioritizing immediate and long-range needs and determining resource availability.
  • Plans and develops training curricula for respective application(s) as evidenced by:
  • Building, testing, and maintaining the application training environments.
  • Designing and developing teaching/training materials for presentations/training sessions according to professional and developmental learning needs.
  • Utilizing creativity, adaptability, and knowledge of available resources in key elements of instructional design.
  • Review Epic’s Training Wheels to gain an understanding of the lesson plan matrix development required.
  • Provides instruction in the application(s) of expertise in various educational offerings, e.g., workshops, core curriculum specialty blocks, general, and unit in-services.
  • Responds appropriately to desired and undesired behaviors in class, keeping department managers informed as deemed appropriate.
  • Coordinates plans with colleagues and peer trainers to avoid duplication and maximize the value of resources.
  • Analyzes data from feedback and participant evaluations for quality improvement monitoring and reporting as evidenced by:¿
  • Analyzing core curricula to ensure effectiveness and currency to best meet the needs of specialized application area(s).
  • Evaluating program content and instruction, including effectiveness and appropriateness of both the educational process and its outcome.
  • Developing and administering tools to measure participant learning based on behavioral objectives of programs; evaluating areas of learning.
  • Requesting and utilizing feedback from leadership and educational personnel to evaluate transfer of learning and participant reaction to programs.
  • Consults, presents to and collaborates with project management, application specialists, department leadership, super users, and representatives to ensure information is current, standardized, and in alignment with end users’ needs and organizational initiatives.
  • Works with analysts and credentialed trainers to create a testing process during upgrades.
  • Works collaboratively with education departments and the Learning Management System to disseminate training for EHR content.
  • Plans and executes long-term vision for assigned application(s).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Certification/Skills:


    • Superior communication skills, both oral and written, including specific skills such as presentation skills and the ability to communicate complex subjects to non-technical groups.
    • Superior customer relation skills, including leading/participating in group sessions and reaching consensus. Presentation and facilitation experience are a must with large and small groups.
    • Ability to plan and manage projects of various sizes, including tasks, dependencies, team members, other resources, and timelines.
    • Experience as principal trainer performing instructional design, training delivery, application implementation(s), etc., as a healthcare provider employee or consultant to healthcare providers
    • Expert in adult learning theory.
    • Proficient in at least one eLearning development tool (e.g., Camtasia, Captivate, Storyline).
    • Knowledge of e-learning storyboarding/scripting and e-learning technology.
    • Active Epic certification in at least one Epic module or must receive Epic certification/certification-level proficiency for the applicable module(s). Must receive a passing score (as defined by Epic), within two attempts, on all required exams and projects (as defined by Epic) within six weeks after completion of training or within a pre-determined 6-week timeframe. 

    Minimum Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business, or a related discipline; equivalent years of related experience in health care or information technology will be considered in lieu of education requirement.

    Minimum Experience:

    Four (4) years of experience in a healthcare-related field is required. One (1) year of experience supporting one or more of the following  Epic modules is preferred: Optime, Lumens, and Anesthesia. Large-scale healthcare systems planning and implementation experience on application software products is preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

    Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas. This role will be hybrid.
